Following on from the thread about Walter Mitty types, have you ever thought someone was a Walter Mitty type or were telling tall tales or plain lies but found out later it was true?
I had a school friend who said their brother was in the French Foreign Legion. I had seen the Foreign Legion in the odd black and white film but didn't think it really existed so this must be a lie (this was a few years before being able to Google everything). Once I was at my friend's house and saw a framed photo on the wall. It was a formal photo of rows of men in an odd uniform in a desert type setting. My friends mother saw me looking and said 'third from the left in the front row is xxxxxs brother - he is in the French Foreign Legion'. There were other things my friend had said which I thought were exaggerations so I tried to be less sceptical (and most of them later turned out to be true).
