Dental pain

A few years ago I had a filling put in, it was placed directly on top of the nerve and it ended up causing a big infection. Today I've had the filled tooth, and the tooth next to it, removed. I'm in a LOT of pain now the anaesthetic has worn off Sad But it has just occurred to me that the dentist didn't prescribe me any antibiotics, shouldn't he have done? You could see the infection on the xray, it was quite a large area in my gum. He's removed the rotten teeth but if the infection was in my gum it will still be there, won't it?
