Would anyone be able to recommend somewhere we could stop off the M4 (near Newbury), have a picnic and children run around (happy to pay and have NT membership)? I'm planning ahead...

Thank you.

Snelsmore Common, The Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham, the Living Rainforest if it's open. Bowood House in Calne is nice for a stop off. It's more Swindon way than Newbury though. I'm not which what's survived the lockdown though.

Greenham Common which is the South side of Newbury, but easier to Navigate too.
North Heath at Chieveley.
Victoria Park in the centre of Newbury.
So many amazing places here we are very green.

Snelsmore Common is about 5 mins from J13 (Newbury), but out favourites are Dinton Pastures at J10 (toilet & changing facilities, good cafe, adventure playground, picnic areas, pedalos for hire in the summer) and Coate Water Country Park at J15 (Toilets, cafe, play area, bird hides, mini golf, picnic and bbq area, model railway).

also Beale Park and there's a NT place near there as well.

Come to Greenham(and Crookham) Common. We have nuclear bunkers and an old fire training plane to see. Facilities in the old control tower. There are cows too.

Snelsmore Common is fairly nice too and closer to the M4.

@Mysterian don't forget the control and the random pipes sticking up out of the ground.
For anyone else the restoration to common land of Greenham and Crookham Commons are considered the most significant environmental project in Europe of the 20th Century. They saw truly significant events in 20th Century history.
My Favourite place to walk couldn't wait to get home this evening and take my dogs out.
