Do You Do Much For Easter?

EternalOptimist7 · 28/03/2021 15:09

Again I am letting magazines full of decorations, recipes etc for Easter get to me too much. I feel guilty that I don’t decorate the house. DD12 isn’t interested in crafts this year really & has said she doesn’t want an egg hunt. I have bought lamb for the Sunday but rump steaks rather than a joint as DD won’t eat it. She has asked for pick & mix instead of an egg. DH & I will have a big bar of chocolate each. I have the whole weekend off except working 4 hours on Easter Saturday. I doubt we’ll do much as DD spends a lot of time in her room. Hopefully we can persuade her to come out for a picnic & we’ll do a BBQ if the weather’s fine ☀️

I was talking about this with Mr Chicken yesterday. We don't do anything for Easter, and didn't grow up doing so either. My mum would sometimes cook lamb, but not every year, and it wasn't called 'Easter lunch'. We'd get a chocolate egg. That's it.

Shahlalala · 28/03/2021 15:12

No, especially not this year. We go see family usually and have a roast, little egg hunt with the children.
It is insane how much people spend. I work in a supermarket and unless folk are buying eggs for everyone they know then I am really mean with the amount my children get! Themed plates and all sorts going on, but it people enjoy it then why not I suppose.

Shahlalala · 28/03/2021 15:13

(As my children get one, that’s plenty!)

I was about to say no nothing then realised I had just got out a couple of Spring/Easter decorations that my neighbour, who is very into Easter decorations, has given me over the years. As a child always got eggs from parents and one aunt but that stopped when I reached my teens I think.
DS is late 20s but still usually get him a cheapie egg for fun but won't be seeing him until after Easter this year so will treat him to something really nice when we finally get together. Can't wait as not seen him since the end of August.

badlydrawnbear · 28/03/2021 15:25

No. We don't decorate the house for Easter (I didn't realise that happened), if we make crafts it is just because it is something to do to fill the time. The Easter bunny comes to our house and hides eggs and leaves a map for DC to find them. I get DC a small, not-chocolate present. In not-covid times, we would have gone to my parents or in-laws for dinner if I wasn't at work. I probably won't cook a roast dinner next Sunday because no one except me really likes it and it is a lot of effort. We would have gone to church if it was possible, but before covid we went every Sunday that I wasn't working.

SuperPixie247 · 28/03/2021 15:26

I have a little easter tree that stands on the Kallax for a bit of fun. DS will get 2 easter eggs and a Lindt bunny from me. His granny likes to do an easter egg hunt too.

I don't like lamb and neither does DS so it will just be a regular tea, we don't always have a roast on a Sunday.

GintyMcGinty · 28/03/2021 15:27

An egg hunt for the kids.
Easter Eggs all round
A roast dinner.

That's it.

In other years husband and kids would have gone to church.

Ifailed · 28/03/2021 15:27

Nothing now. Our kids got easter eggs, and when I was a child our gran would send some in the post, so they were always broken. Never heard of the easter bunny, either, until recently. I gather it's a German custom that has come here via the USA.

Kaleidoscopecascade · 28/03/2021 15:28

When I was a kid getting just chocolate eggs was the best. I notice every year on social media kids are getting more and more. Mine will just get a couple of eggs, we will do an Easter egg hunt at home and a Sunday dinner that's it.

joystir59 · 28/03/2021 15:31

Roast lamb.

user1493413286 · 28/03/2021 15:35

We normally see family but that’s to make the most of the 4 days off rather than especially to celebrate Easter. We do an egg hunt for DD as she’s still little but we don’t do a particular lunch etc

actiongirl1978 · 28/03/2021 15:37

Easter was like Xmas day growing up. I am cathllolic so it was church, eggs from church then home for a roast and eggs and maybe people for lunch.

I like to cook a leg of lamb and DH and an I have a bottle of good red wine and veg for the afternoon or do gardening.

Pre children we'd go to a lovely local Michelin restaurant for the full works a long afternoon lunch.

This year I can't be bothered after all the cooking this year. Seeing parents and In laws for garden picnics on Fri and Sat and then Sunday is reserved for chocolate and Garden jobs.

We have always had an Easter tree I collected eggs in Europe, some wooden, some glass. I use branches that I cut from the garden.

picklemewalnuts · 28/03/2021 15:39

I used to, but it was about keeping children busy- seasonal activities- and being a Christian there were church events.

Usually there are mandy Thursday meal, the Palm Sunday parade, Easter breakfast and services at church.

We'd make Easter biscuits, do an Easter hunt for the chocolate. Go to kids clubs and services where they'd do more Easter hunts...

Now it's just the meal and an Easter egg each, plus whatever church events are on.

Alannathelioness · 28/03/2021 15:40

We normally have a family get together on the Sunday or Monday - me and my brother, our partners, my parents, my aunt and uncle, sometimes their daughter and husband, and my grandma. Whoever is hosting (take it in turns) puts on a big buffet (usually, salmon cooked ham and some kind of hot meat plus sides of potatoes and salad and other dreamy things) and we have a few hours together.
Never used to get chocolate eggs and never did egg hunts or crafts - as kids we would make a homemade card for each family branch but that was it.
I think we just like an excuse to eat and have a natter.
2nd year in a row we can't, which is a real shame. I shall spend my day dreaming of potatoes and ratatouille.

LaceyBetty · 28/03/2021 15:41

Easter egg hunt for the kids and lamb for dinner. That's it here.

Thesearmsofmine · 28/03/2021 15:41

I never did anything for Easter growing up but I do some bits now because I like to celebrate spring.
We have an Easter tree(more for me than the dc tbh), go on an egg hunt locally and I do a little one in the house/garden and I make a big roast. I don’t tend to make roasts often so it feels special like a Christmas dinner.

TokyoSushi · 28/03/2021 15:42

Not really, Easter tree, DH sets up a little egg hunt, Eggs and a small gift (think £10) for the DC and we might have lamb instead of the standard chicken/pork for our roast.

Doyoumindfisithere · 28/03/2021 15:44

We do a lot for spring in our house, yes. We decorate a bit for the equinox and then that all stays up and morphs into Easter decorations. We do a lot of baking for Easter (as much as for Christmas). We are a crafty family anyway and so it is an excuse.

I remember Easter as a big deal from childhood, Lent was a big thing. So even though I do not go to church or do the religious bits now, it feels natural for me to mark it.

However no way do my decs look magazine standard!

Floralnomad · 28/03/2021 15:46

We are going to dinner with my sister on Sunday and that is it . Dh has already eaten about 10 medium sized Easter eggs in the past 2 weeks , neither of my adult dc are fussed about chocolate . We’ve never decorated even when the children were small we only went as far as an egg hunt .

GreenSlide · 28/03/2021 15:48

Yep chocolate egg hunt and a roast. I remember when I was little we used to paint boiled eggs and roll them down hills!

ParkheadParadise · 28/03/2021 15:50

We will go to Mass on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Have an Easter hunt for Dd. Take my great-nieces and nephews eggs to them.
Depends on what the weather is like, might meet up with family outside.

Notanotherhun · 28/03/2021 15:51

Easter is a religious festival. Not a party. A few eggs hidden is about my limit.

LookAChicken · 28/03/2021 15:53

Eggs.

Becca19962014 · 28/03/2021 15:54

For me it's as important as Christmas. I buy Easter cards, pop a short letter in and send small gifts (usually a bible study and small lack of Easter eggs) for people who I went to church with who are now too old/disabled to attend (most churches having closed and some being inaccessible) who I run bible studies for offline (letters). I live alone with no family, can't attend church even pre covid so it's just a normal Easter for me.

I do Holy Week services at home, watch The Bible series on DVD, will do some journalling and extra prayers. I'll do the triduum and then have full (Christmas like) roast next Sunday.

A few years ago a (then) Christian friend said to me she ignores Easter because she doesn't see the point..

firstimemamma · 28/03/2021 15:54

We've got one toddler. We're not doings loads but at the same time we're not doing nothing - I like to think we're somewhere in the middle. I'll put out a couple of decorations, we'll bake 2 recipes together, he's got a small Easter basket and we've got tickets for an egg hunt at a country park. We bought little gifts (think a pound per child) for his friends and cousins. Nothing else planned, no special meal or cards.
