Do You Do Much For Easter?

EternalOptimist7 · 28/03/2021 15:09

Again I am letting magazines full of decorations, recipes etc for Easter get to me too much. I feel guilty that I don’t decorate the house. DD12 isn’t interested in crafts this year really & has said she doesn’t want an egg hunt. I have bought lamb for the Sunday but rump steaks rather than a joint as DD won’t eat it. She has asked for pick & mix instead of an egg. DH & I will have a big bar of chocolate each. I have the whole weekend off except working 4 hours on Easter Saturday. I doubt we’ll do much as DD spends a lot of time in her room. Hopefully we can persuade her to come out for a picnic & we’ll do a BBQ if the weather’s fine ☀️

Oh and there I was worrying that the Easter essentials that are crackers might have been stuck in a container in the Suez canal.

@broadstrokes

We're RC ... I'm doing a massive spring clean of ground floor this week Decorating with daffodils and other spring bulbs Decorating with a few decorations we've had since DC were small Experimenting with hot cross bun recipe for Friday Friday we are having cod pesto dish Saturday every family member = socially distanced volunteering Sunday long early dog walk followed by mass from Rome on TV followed by leg of lamb, new potatoes, mint sauce, peas, braised leeks and carrots vichy, lots of phone calls to family Followed by lemon curd meringue thing Also making a decorated carrot cake Going to be trying to tidy up terrace and garden during the holidays
I went to a reflection service on good Friday one year where we had "fresh" hot cross buns. At the end of the service the person running it confessed they were a disaster so they were binned and we were having shop brought - though he promised to toast them himself!

We usually go and see my mum. She lives 300 miles away so we can only go during school holidays, but we obviously can’t go this year again. Won’t be doing much really. No plans for Friday, Saturday is dd dancing (zoom) and ds has a footie match. Sunday is rugby training for ds then the club are doing an egg hunt for the kids which is nice. I’ll do roast lamb for dinner. Monday the in-laws will do an egg hunt for the kids in the garden now that we’re allowed to see them.

We won’t be decorating the house or buying Easter crackers etc. We never have and I’m not starting now

Yes I gather even Mary Berry said that shop bought were as good or better than home made! Whoever is coming to stay with us at Easter usually brings them from UK to us, but owing to Covid etc (and Brexit postal issues) I am opting to experiment this year. ..not entirely confident about it though!

broadstrokes · 29/03/2021 15:28

Sorry that was in reply to Becca19962014

Becca19962014 · 29/03/2021 15:53

@broadstrokes it's worth it if you can manage them! Good luck!!

Shock shocked at Mary Berry, this is simply not true!
dottiedaisee · 29/03/2021 17:18

When the children were younger we did an Easter egg hunt and I would cook a roast and both grandmas would join us ...no Decs etc .
I still get my adult children a couple of eggs each and I do now have a twig tree that I decorate .

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/03/2021 17:54

Home made hot cross buns are good, but I agree with Mary Berry, it's hard to get the lightness of shop bought.

Caspianberg · 29/03/2021 18:05

We make paul Hollywood’s recipe for hot cross buns every year ( also not in uk so can’t buy in supermarket). They seem to work well, and I’m usually a crap baker!

broadstrokes · 29/03/2021 21:06

Thanks for the tip Caspianberg.

I'll let you all know how they turn out!

Becca19962014 · 29/03/2021 21:43

Hopefully yummy!! broadstrokes !

broadstrokes · 30/03/2021 14:10

Fingers crossed Becca Grin!

[Need to plough through work and finish for Easter hol first to get to the point where I can try the recipe!!]

museummumblog · 30/03/2021 14:38

We have an English Heritage Easter trail, the Beano Trail at Wakehurst and Stonor Park new playground all booked. Seeing my sister and her family for the first time in months for a walk. And then looking forward to getting back into Central London with the kids.

If you're looking for things to do this Easter with kids I've included over 60 ideas in this post:
museummum.com/2021/03/30/easter-2021-london/. It's London and the South East focused but also has online events and theatre and at home activities that can be done any time.

EffYouSeeKaye · 30/03/2021 14:47

Decorate the kitchen
Fish pie on Good Friday
Roast Lamb on Easter Sunday with family
Hot cross buns
Egg hunt
Baking
Mass

I prefer Easter to Christmas these days. Nicer weather. Proper balance of celebration vs faff.

ApplesPearsAndCrumble · 30/03/2021 14:50

I am Jewish but DH and the DCs are CofE. But we all have the principle that life is short and parties are GREAT!

So we do a fairly simple Passover which mainly revolves around roast chicken and gefilte fish and an easter that revolves around egg hunting and roast lamb and simnel cake. The main approach is fun, family and joy. :) None of it is terribly formal, but I decorate with easter eggs and candles and all sorts.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 30/03/2021 14:52

Roast dinner.
Chocolate.

BurbageBrook · 30/03/2021 14:53

Pre-Covid, a Sunday roast with family, or maybe a buffet lunch on a sunny Easter. As a kid, eating chocolate eggs for breakfast. That's about it!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 30/03/2021 14:54

Very little. DH and I get chocolate eggs for each other or buy a big one to share and I make a Simnel cake. (I'm not religious, I just really like marzipan.)

This year we're having roast lamb but we don't usually (I don't like the smell of lamb when it's cooking so I barely ever make it).

RavingAnnie · 30/03/2021 14:56

Wtf decorates their house for Easter?!? When did that become a thing?

lunte2003 · 31/03/2021 14:23

We'll have such a scaled back Easter this year it is really rather depressing! My kids however are fortunately too little to understand and will love anything that involves chocolate and going on a bit of a hunt in the garden :-)
