Things I Have Learnt...

I dislocated my knee and fainted a few hours ago, on my own with DS4. We don’t have a landline phone, the front door was locked with a chain high up out of reach as well as they key in the lock. There’s no access from the back.

Thankfully, a school mum had mentioned in conversation a few weeks ago that she has epilepsy and that she has taught her son how to ring her mum if she says she feels poorly. I realised my DS wouldn’t know how to get in to my phone and even if he did, wouldn’t know how to call my mum from it, so I set up my mum as emergency contact and showed DS how to do it from the Lock Screen. I had a few conversations when we were out walking like what would you do if mummy fell over? And talked him through it.

I woke up to my clever little boy on the phone to my mum, telling her that mummy had fallen over in the kitchen and was asleep. I’m so, so glad I taught him what to do now because I hate to think of him sitting with me just being scared.

I also had to ask him to drag a chair to the front door so he could climb up and unhook the chain and unlock the door.

It could just be me that didn’t think before this month to teach their DCwhat to do in an emergency, I just thought he was too young and nothing would happen. I’m so, so glad I had that chat with his friends mum.

Going forward, I’m going to make sure I take the chain off the door as soon as I wake up. What other things can I do?

Teach him your address, full name and how to ring 999.
How to unlock a door in an emergency.
If you have any regular medication, where a list of it is.
Where a list of emergency contacts are.

Clever lad for following your instructions.
