New to ebay, having some problems

I have just started selling on ebay. 3 of my things have been 'sold'. But it's saying that the buyers haven't paid yet. Which doesn't make sense because how can they be buyers if they haven't paid? They wouldn't be buyers then would they?

It's telling me not to send the parcels off until I have received the money but it just doesn't seem to be happening. It's been days now. But I can't wait forever because they have 'bought' the stuff and will be expecting it to arrive soon surely. So I don't know what to do. Should I send the parcels now anyway?

I'm not doing bidding by the way, just a normal buy.

Thank you.

They’ve contracted to buy your items and are therefore buyers.

You can send them a message reminding them to pay. If they don’t within a certain timeframe you can report them as non-paying bidders, which gives them a few more days to pay and if they don’t you can relist the items.

Whatever you do don’t post the items without payment.

You have got a PayPal account set on your email profile, haven’t you?

TomHardyAndMe · 27/03/2021 16:49

There must be an idiot’s guide somewhere in eBay for new sellers, surely?

TheOpportuneMoment · 27/03/2021 16:53

They haven't bought it until they've paid for it. You can send them a payment reminder message. Usually one reminder does the trick, if they still don't pay, you can send another saying that if you haven't received payment by x day, you will cancel the sale and relist.

I sell a lot of things on eBay and have done for years. First, don't send anything until you have the money. You can send the buyer an invoice as a reminder. If they haven't paid with the invoice reminder, then go to "Resolve a problem" and you can open an unpaid item case.

In the future, I would suggest that you put something on your listing such as "Payment within 48 hours of the listing ending". Many sellers do this, so that it is clear to buyers that you are not prepared to hang around waiting for payment. If you don't receive payment once the 48 hours is up, then open an unpaid item case. This still gives the buyer 4 days to pay and if you have a non-payer, then eBay will refund your fees and you can re-list.

Ebay is great for selling things. You just need to be on top of things.

Also, you can change your settings to have immediate payment on a Buy-it-Now. You have your settings so that the buyer can "Add to basket". I prefer not to have immediate payment because I offer combined postage on multiple items and it's a pain if someone pays for a few items and then I need to refund the postage. However, you could consider an immediate payment option, if all you items are BIN.

ThePenIsBlue · 27/03/2021 18:29

Don’t cancel a sale if they don’t pay, you’ll have to pay the fees and they get away with it. Open an unpaid item case, then when they don’t pay they get a black Mark against their name. I have my profile set so that anyone with 2 unpaid item marks against them cannot bid on any of my items.

I don't understand why people don't pay straight away, so annoying!

On the off chance that you're selling a pair of 3s hollister flares, I suggest you cancel the sale and relist Wink

Elieza · 27/03/2021 20:18

I always pay right away unless I’m asleep when I win and then I pay the following day.

It annoys me if I get a reminder to pay under these circs.

However nothing wrong with a nice: ‘thank you for buying this item. I would be grateful if you could please pay promptly. I aim to dispatch the same day. I hope you like your item. Thanks”

Ebays got help pages that tell you how long they have to pay. It used to be a week. After which time you can presumably raise a dispute.

Norris63203 · 27/03/2021 21:06

@Elieza I'm just worried that they have paid properly and there's something I'm missing and they are waiting for their item to come and I still haven't sent it yet.

Attached to your eBay profile?

Norris63203 · 27/03/2021 21:18

@TomHardyAndMe I'm not actually sure. When I go to 'link PayPal account' It won't let me log into Paypal.

My email and password are correct but it is saying it needs to send a confirmation thingy to my phone but I have a different number now. There is no option to send it to email instead.

I can't ask for help on their website because you have to log in to ask a question which is really stupid because I can't log in.

You can't help the helpless folks

LondonStone · 27/03/2021 21:31

eBay are phasing out the use of PayPal, soon you will be paid directly to your bank account via eBay.

If you signed up very recently, did you input your bank account number and sort code? That could be why it won’t let you link your PayPal now. There’s a big push for everyone to move away from PayPal.

eBay will send you an email like this (whether you use PayPal or their new payment system) with the postage address on.

If you haven’t had an email and it says they haven’t paid, you’ve probably got a non-paying buyer unfortunately.

Open a case and you won’t pay a fee and you can relist the item.

@LondonStone I have not had an an email like that. This is what ebay looks like:

Ebay definitely knows my bank details because I have been buying stuff for years but this is the first time I am selling.

@LondonStone I'll try sending that again because it looks a bit blurry.

Go on their order details, click on 'send invoice', make sure everything looks OK then click send.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 27/03/2021 21:56

Just seen the screenshot, click the send invoice tab.

ThePenIsBlue · 28/03/2021 09:55

That’s odd, the bottom one looks like they have paid, but as you are a new seller eBay won’t release the funds straight away. eBay are very good on their help desk if you can contact them?

ThePenIsBlue · 28/03/2021 09:56

When you go to the Home Screen on the app, does it say please dispatch item?
