I’ve just found out that Tennessee Williams is not, in fact, a woman

I mean I haven’t got an MA in English Lit so I suppose it’s not too bad... or is it?

I did think she’d done well as a playwright in a male-dominated world Blush Grin

Has anyone made a similar mistake that they don’t know whether they should confess?

A relative of mine had read quite a lot of George Elliot before they found out (from me) that she was a woman!

Honestly, I'd be really surprised at someone not knowing this. I'd be less surprised if you said you'd never heard of Tennessee Williams - but if you've heard of him at all, how would you not have heard of pronouns used?

Equally I guess, there's masses of obvious stuff I don't know. My Geography is really poor, so I suppose we're all different.

CorCordium · 26/03/2021 15:51

That’s a good point Earrings and surely they’d have mentioned the female bit too (if TW was female) and the fact they didn’t should probably have been a clue!

My English teacher taught us a streetcar named desire as a set text and told us all he was a woman. We all got A’s or A* 😂😂😂

Not being snidey @CorCordium but genuinely interested-why did you think he was a woman?

Elderflower14 · 26/03/2021 15:54

I know of someone who was convinced Hinge and Brackett were women!!

DarkDarkNight · 26/03/2021 15:57

I’m sure you know but Evelyn Waugh is a man too OP Grin.

halfhope · 26/03/2021 15:57

I always thought Julian of Norwich was male (I'm not from the UK).

Love51 · 26/03/2021 15:58

Evelyn Waugh. Apparently the clue is in the spelling, but if no one ever taught you that, how would you know?

Love51 · 26/03/2021 15:58

Oops got distracted an X posted.

tara66 · 26/03/2021 16:04

You really should know that!!

HildaTablet · 26/03/2021 16:08

@Love51

Evelyn Waugh. Apparently the clue is in the spelling, but if no one ever taught you that, how would you know?
Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn Waugh. They were known to their friends as He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn Grin
CorCordium · 26/03/2021 16:09

mumsie I just thought Tennessee would be a woman’s name.

Boomclaps I’m feeling a lot better now! Grin

I didn’t realise that ‘We need to talk about Kevin ‘ author Lionel Shriver was female until way after I had read the book.

Evelyn Waugh. Apparently the clue is in the spelling, but if no one ever taught you that, how would you know?

Love51 I’m so confused by this, aren’t male and female Evelyn spelt the same?

PS I did know about Evelyn Waugh! Grin

No!! Imagine didn't know this!! I've always expected man with long beard! No!!

garlictwist · 26/03/2021 20:19

Don't worry, OP. I only recently found out that Tina Turner is not, in fact, a man in drag.

SprungisSpringYaY · 26/03/2021 20:21

Oh gosh I'm going mad, maybe it's the vaccine.
Op I thought you said he was a woman. Grin

CorCordium · 26/03/2021 21:14

Grin Sprung though by the looks of things he had a moustache not a long beard.
