When referring to the Insurance / banking co?

I have always said San Tan Dare but yesterday on the radio it was pronounced san tan duh .

San tan dare. I'm still stinging at them changing from Alliance and Leicester and losing my 5% interest on savings! Those were the days....

Finfintytint · 26/03/2021 08:38

The first pronunciation.

Hoppinggreen · 26/03/2021 08:38

I speak Castilian rather than Catalan so I could be wrong but I would say
San tan dayrr (soft r with a slight roll on it though)

DancesWithDaffodils · 26/03/2021 08:52

I do it wrong, and add an extra syllable
San tan day er
Blush

BeesAnkles · 26/03/2021 09:00

You pronounce it the Spanish ("correct") way. Except in Spanish we roll the last 'r' Grin

Theswitch · 26/03/2021 09:03

San-tan-der

TheFlis12345 · 26/03/2021 09:03

They say san-tan-dare in their adverts so I am assuming that is correct!

Just to clarify, I mean you are pronouncing it correctly, OP.
carrie74 · 26/03/2021 11:41

I think I say more San Tawn Dare 🤔

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 26/03/2021 11:42

Abbey National.

Nicolastuffedone · 26/03/2021 12:14

San Tan Der

Emmelina · 26/03/2021 12:15

San tan dare. It’s how they pronounce it themselves in their adverts!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/03/2021 12:16

San tan day er.

Which in a slightly different accent is probably San tan dare

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 26/03/2021 12:36

San tan dare

PattyPan · 26/03/2021 13:06

San tan dare is correct for those of us incapable of rolling our r’s (Sad)

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 26/03/2021 13:08

You are right and the radio was wrong. I speak Spanish and San tan dare is a close English pronunciation of their name because they're a Spanish bank.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/03/2021 13:13

I always say Santan-duh, I'm pretty sure that's not the correct pronunciation but I'd feel silly saying Santan-dair.

SoupDragon · 26/03/2021 13:15

San tan dare, like they do in their adverts.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 26/03/2021 14:22

Good!

I assumed it was pronounced as close as I can get to the Spanish city, but then wondered, after listening to the radio (R4 news, too!) if I was being pretentious.

LOL at Abbey National. Their Insurance is now run by Aviva, anyway - or should I say Norwich Union.
