I'm not sure I want to know the answer, but is anyone able to translate some teen slang for me?

I just saw that a bloke has posted on DD's Instagram 'jumpers fire my guy'. I've not really been able to work it out but the little I have found has made my heart sink. She's 20, so an adult but has made some very poor decisions in the last year which make me think she can be a bit vulnerable.

Anyone able to translate for me?

NO way does it mean he likes her jumper.

You know what it means, you just don't like it.

In what way do you think DD is vulnerable?

JustLyra · 24/03/2021 21:04

He’s complimenting clothes.

Randomly in the group one of my DDs is part of jumper and shorts are used for any kind of top or any kind of bottoms. Utterly baffling, but that’s teens for you

If there are other people in the pics it might not even be her top he’s referring too.

MariLwyd · 24/03/2021 21:04

Okay other people seem to be finding ‘jumper’ as slang for something about oral sex on urban dictionary but it’s not showing that for me!

ThingsIdontwanttoknow · 24/03/2021 21:05

@Ickle37

She's 20? I know they never stop being our babies, but...

She's a vulnerable 20 with a track record of poor decisions and emotional volatility. I'm just wondering whether to raise with her gently some of the things I'm concerned about.

Reinventinganna · 24/03/2021 21:05

Ask her

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 24/03/2021 21:06

My dd18 says it means he likes her top

ThingsIdontwanttoknow · 24/03/2021 21:10

I don't like it, you're right.

I wonder if she has something like BPD. She's certainly very susceptible to peer pressure, and desperate to be liked.

I think he refused to go out with her because of her poor mental health but was happy to take advantage of her in other ways.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/03/2021 21:10

Could it be an in joke?
I asked Dd and she said it meant nice jumper too btw.

zeitgeista · 24/03/2021 21:13

i am 16 abs based on the context of your updates i am almost certain he was just being sarcastic
.

AmelieTaylor · 24/03/2021 21:15

@ThingsIdontwanttoknow

Does she ever bring up her MH or anything?

It sounds like you know you need to DO something but aren't sure how to do it, it's not easy when they're 20. I guess all you can do is talk to her, being as careful as you can, start by asking open ended questions...

Best of luck.

ThingsIdontwanttoknow · 24/03/2021 21:19

She refuses to talk about her MH.

I'll have a think about how to approach all this.

Thanks. Yes, that might be the case, I guess.

In the States/ Canada jumper means pinafore. Is she wearing something like that?

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 24/03/2021 21:27

If it wasn't obvious it was about an actual jumper, then I'd think suicide(jump off a building) or drugs. But I'm old, and cynical.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 24/03/2021 21:33

You really do need to talk to her.
Don't mention I saw this jumpers comment when I was looking through your Instagram
or
I feel you have been making poor decisions. She's 20.

Talk to her about her day, what's she's been cooking, how she's getting on with friends etc .. and talk regularly but without over advising or over talking, really listen. If she is making poor decisions she needs to feel she can talk to you easily.

Tigerchips · 24/03/2021 21:33

Like your jumper.

She's 20, just talk to her!

CandyLeBonBon · 24/03/2021 21:34

Urban dictionary says 'jumpers' is slang for some kind of drugs, so presumably 'jumpers fire' means 'those uppers were rather marvellous"

activitythree · 24/03/2021 21:37

@ThingsIdontwanttoknow

Ok, I'm going to go with the majority and assume that he has noticed her jumper and likes it.

And try to sabotage them ever meeting again

She wasn't wearing a jumper in the picture

ThingsIdontwanttoknow · 24/03/2021 21:38

When I looked through all the pictures I noticed a couple when she had a jumper on.

OP posts:
bushhbb · 24/03/2021 21:40

Tip: if you type in normal words to Urban dictionary, you will come up with strange 'definitions' that nobody actually uses.

Not every word young people use is slang. I think jumper actually does just mean jumper, and I've never heard it used in any other way. How is this concerning?

ThingsIdontwanttoknow · 24/03/2021 21:43

@Tigerchips

Like your jumper.

She's 20, just talk to her!

Trust me, if it was as easy as that, I would have already.

We talk about all kinds of things, and we're in touch a lot (almost every day) when she is at uni, but there are some things she won't talk about. I do an awful lot of listening, but she is so up and down emotionally that I have to be very careful what I say and when I say it.

OP posts:
allofthecheese · 24/03/2021 21:45

Most definitely just saying 'cool jumper dude' or perhaps sarcastically. Never heard of the oral sex reference anywhere, how bizzare.

SplendidSuns1000 · 24/03/2021 21:53

I'm 22 and can't say I know much of the youth's slang but I promise, it's just him complimenting her jumper. It might be a jumper he's talked about with her before (maybe she's worn it when seeing him, or he has the same one or something) and he's picked up on it. Slang these days isn't often code, jumper won't mean anything other than the item of clothing. He might just be shit at complimenting people and he thought that was the best thing to say.

If your DD isn't up to communicating well with you, just assure her you're there for her, that she can tell you anything and try to hide your emotions well if she tells you something you don't like. Be a blank canvas and open minded and she'll be more likely to feel comfortable telling you things. When she's in a good mood, be in a good mood with her, if she's feeling down let her feel it. You don't have to lift her mood unless she requests it. Just empathise and be there for her and she'll come to you when she's ready.

Kona84 · 24/03/2021 21:55

I take it to mean your jumper makes me hard
Lights the fire in his ‘guy’
Gets him going.

Blondefancy · 24/03/2021 21:55

Just for reference absolutely no young person would say “fire new car” hahaha, we’d say that new car is fire
