Breastfeeding pain

Hi all, has anyone experienced a burning feeling in the breast tissue when breastfeeding? My little boy is 8 weeks old and was born with a tongue tie which wasn't diagnosed for 3.5 weeks. By that time he'd shredded my nipples and I'd had mastitis. Since then his latch has been much better, still some nipple pain, but the main issue I have is a constant burning sensation on the skin and deep in the breast tissue of both breasts. It's worse straight after a feed but never goes away. It feels like someone has rubbed chilli into my breasts. Have been treated for thrush with no effect and another bout of mastitis but just desperately trying to find anyone who has come across anything similar! Any thoughts or experiences very welcome as I can't keep on like this! Thanks in advance! Xx

Sounds like nipple thrush! A deep sharp painful pain. Your GP can do a nipple swab.

It’s a pain to get rid of if it’s thrush but I would recommend making sure you’re prescribe treatment for your nipple and babies mouth-
Otherwise if ones cured the other will just pass it back. Loads of live yoghurt. Fresh bra as often as possible, as much sunlight and air on nipples as possible

Did you have antibiotics for your mastitis?

It really does sound like thrush- I’ve just spent 6 weeks getting rid of mine!

Yes, I had the really deep pain- it was only slightly relieved if I applied pressure both during and after feeding. DC had undiagnosed tongue tie though, and when it was snipped at 15 weeks I never had it again. Have you had his tongue checked again? Sometimes it can reattach. Or had him checked for lip tie?

Yes I had antibiotics which cleared up the mastitis. Did your thrush affect the breast tissue? I assumed it would be just the nipple but this is all over and constant, doesn't last just an hour after feeding which a lot of the articles seem to quote. Want to give up bfeeding because of it if I'm honest!

Really sounds like thrush to me. The shooting/burning pain right through the boob is classic thrush symptom. I hadn't even heard of nipple thrush before getting it a week into feeding DC1. I massively feel for you. I found it brutal and it took nearly 3 months for me to be rid of it for good. It seems to vary a lot how quickly people manage to get rid. One doctor did tell me that some people are more/less prone to it recurring so I think I was just unlucky. I constantly put everything that came into contact with my nipples on 60 washes and treated both my nipples and DD's mouth. Still don't know what made it finally bugger off for good. Hope you manage to shift it more quickly than I did!

Antibiotics can cause nipple thrush. And yes it can affected more than just the nipple.
