PLEASE help me find a short residential course starting soon for my 18yr old DD

DD started uni but dropped out due to the stress of covid etc. Now looking to do a short residential course to fill the time till Sept. Ideally something drama / theatre related, maybe dance as well? but willing to look at anything tbh. Starting as soon as possible - after Easter ideally. RADA are only doing online courses at the moment but really want something residential where she can meet other people. I thought there would be loads of things but I can't see anything and not sure where to look anyway.

Thank you!! Xx

(Please don't suggest she just gets a job or waits till Sept, she needs to do something now, she can't work for various reasons I don't want to go into here)

I don't think any will have been arranged because everything is too uncertain right now.

HollowTalk · 24/03/2021 12:33

But it's lockdown. Courses like that won't be starting for months.

RunningFromInsanity · 24/03/2021 12:34

Online courses such as The Open University or The Centre of Excellence often have cheap courses on offer?

Beamur · 24/03/2021 12:37

Very much doubt there will be anything.
Chatting with a friend earlier this week who usually works in a residential educational setting, they've been asked to return for training in 6 weeks, with a view to maybe opening a month after that. So the very earliest they might re-open is still 10 weeks away.

Psuedoshoes · 24/03/2021 12:37

What country are you in OP? I think people would assume you're in the UK where such courses obviously won't be available for some time

LIZS · 24/03/2021 12:38

Most face to face short courses have been suspended or are virtual. There may be online internships/work experience coming up if that appeals. Otherwise tuition centres such as Explore Learning are operating virtually if she could work from home.

Duplooooo · 24/03/2021 12:39

Thank you for the responses. Yeah this is the worst time to be looking i guess 😕
But I will look at the Open University and the Centre of Excellence. I have never even heard of the Centre of Excellence but I like the sound of it based on its name 😁

Futurelearn run free courses online.

Duplooooo · 24/03/2021 12:41

I guess volunteering might be an option, if there is anything like that... DD would like to make a difference.

There's a real push for kids stuff to open up so may be some volunteering around that - circus skills, kids drama clubs? Probably won't be residential but there may be other volunteers to interact with. Volunteering at a vaccine centre or foodbank? There's a range of ages usually...

LIZS · 24/03/2021 12:45

There may be a local Voluntary Services/Voluntary Action office advertising vacancies - some face to face, some virtual.

minniemoocher · 24/03/2021 12:46

Been searching myself for similar reasons. Unfortunately there's nothing, no jobs either. Was hoping she could visit friends in a European country in may for an extended visit but now looking unlikely.

GravityFalls · 24/03/2021 12:48

Not sure what’s running or in what form but the BFI Film Academy courses always sound fun - www.bfi.org.uk/bfi-film-academy-opportunities-young-creatives

Duplooooo · 24/03/2021 12:50

Thanks Gravity will check that out. It is a hard time to be a young person...

Millennium college used to do a short foundation course but I don't know if they are even open any more

Rose Bruford runs short summer courses as do places like urdang bird performers and loads of other dance schools.....but this year?

Enko · 24/03/2021 12:53

Try your local adult education center

thesandwich · 24/03/2021 12:56

Have a look at do it.org for volunteering. Volunteer in a local school?

thesandwich · 24/03/2021 12:56

Futurelearn and coursera do v good online courses.

I'm afraid the schools round us are currently closed to in-person volunteers to try to preserve their bubbles. Just limiting the number of people in school to minimise the risks of transmission.
There might be Covid volunteering available? Still shopping or delivering prescriptions etc.
I suspect the first volunteering beyond that might be outdoor conservation work - beach cleaning, clearing woodland etc is still happening here. Socially distanced, but with other people and definitely making a difference.

DoThePropeller · 24/03/2021 13:05

I know you said she can’t get a job but have you thought about a job that involves drama, dance etc. We have a local attraction nearby where they often take drama students to be fairies, elves etc and there are things like Stagecoach or BabyBallet starting again soon that may need assistants. Often the time commitment can be quite low so not like getting a full time job.

Duplooooo · 24/03/2021 13:08

Just looked at Millennium and they do have a short course but unfortunately it runs Aug to Feb so won't work for DD but may be of interest to someone else reading this thread x

Unfortunate she is not able to work. Thanks though 🙂
