Personal information and the newspapers

A few times now, I have seen Mail Online news stories/articles where they have just take a thread from Mumsnet and ran with it. It just concerns me that posters think they should be okay putting info on Mumsnet, because family or friends won't see it, only for it to be posted mainstream. It could really affect people if they recognise things. How do people feel about this? Should it be allowed?

Yes, I know it's the internet, but it just worries me

People should think very carefully about the information they are putting in the public domain.

Schrutesbeets · 23/03/2021 14:51

I had a big post on here about 3 years ago under a different name and it got in several news papers and an Australian talk show even covered it. I was dumbfounded. Since then I don't post anything identifying and name change fairly frequently.

I especially worry about the abusive relationship type threads. Do you think the newspapers have the good sense not to use those?

The moral us don't put stuff on MN that you wouldn't want anyone to read.

Because, you know, anyone can read it.

Rerunning internet threads isn the guise of newspaper stories is lady journalism for sure 🙄 but it's completely legal (unless anything in the thread itself is defamatory, fir example about a named figure, but then I imagine MN would have deleted it).

lazy not lady, obvs

Some posters seem to have no one else to turn to, and they do receive some helpful support, so I can understand why they post.

This is why I won't post about 2 of my biggest problems i would love advice but I have absolutely no one in rl I can confide in about it and scared I post on here and it ends up being in the papers.

Fairydustrust · 23/03/2021 15:24

There should be some sort of privacy rule or a disclaimer saying on certain posts, you are not allowed to put on another website. Some of the support on here is amazing babyg maybe you could change a few details to give out the main points of your questions?

You don't have a right to privacy in public.

Fairydustrust · 23/03/2021 15:45

I know, but it just seems some sort of decency rule could be applied, just to keep vulnerable people safer

Of course it should be allowed; this is a public forum.

No, there shouldn’t, and any disclaimer put on a post doesn’t stop it being lifted because this is a public forum.

There’s also been another thread on this exact topic posted this morning:

I'm sure I saw a thread like this this morning, it's in the public domain so effectively it's fair game to use. If you make things public you lose your right to privacy. There can't be any disclaimer because it wouldn't work.

Ahh cross posted! I knew I wasn't imagining it!

Fairydustrust · 23/03/2021 16:06

Thanks folks. I hadn't seen the previous thread. Although that poor op seems to be getting a few harsh comments.

You have asked almost exactly the same thing, and singled out the DM, so you probably will too.
