Why do people like driving an automatic?

Waited a long time due to the pandemic for my new car to arrive and I'm not loving the automatic driving experience ☹️

Please try and sell it to me? Spent a lot of money and waited close to a year, really really want to like it

Because it’s like driving a go-kart! I don’t know, I love driving autos.

Mumblechum0 · 22/03/2021 17:55

I drove manual cars for almost 40 years before I got my little convertible in summer. I bought it for the colour and was a bit concerned that it's automatic but honestly I love it now, particularly because when you're in traffic you don't have to constantly change gear and use the clutch.

Stick with it, maybe you just aren't driving it often enough in lockdown to get used to it?

Blueberries0112 · 22/03/2021 17:56

I grew up with straight drive but I always struggle with it because of my hearing, I can’t tell when to shift gears.

Auto for me

Iwantacookie · 22/03/2021 17:56

Because it's so easy theres just park and drive. Never buying a manual again love my automatic

Chemenger · 22/03/2021 17:56

I don’t like them either. Just doesn’t give the same feeling of being in control.

Blueberries0112 · 22/03/2021 17:57

And I was always afraid I could ruin the transmission

Insomnia5 · 22/03/2021 17:57

It’s easier to learn

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/03/2021 17:57

I hate automatics. I've never seen the appeal and I don't feel properly in control of the car.

We once had a car that you could switch between automatic and manual. I always drove it in manual, dh always drove it in auto.

I'm sure if I had to drive an automatic I'd get used to it.

MesmerisingMinerva · 22/03/2021 17:57

Give it time. I didn't like them either but wouldn't go back to manual now.

RedcurrantPuff · 22/03/2021 17:57

I just got my first one about 6 months ago, I love it. It’s not really proper driving but it’s so easy. I can’t see me going back to manual now.

What dont you like about it ?

bendmeoverbackwards · 22/03/2021 17:58

God I love an automatic, will never go back to manual now.

I do a lot of town driving, school runs, waiting in queues of traffic etc....an automatic is so much easier.

Don't really understand why all cars aren't automatic - surely that's progress in car technology??

PinkBuffalo · 22/03/2021 18:00

I only have auto licence. For me it was not really a choice, I had so many lesson in manual but still could not start the damn car after hours of lessons!
So it was either automatic or not drive, and I really needed to drive cos my job moved a long way.

Nohomemadecandles · 22/03/2021 18:00

It took my mum a year to like hers. Maybe stick with it?

mars2 · 22/03/2021 18:00

I love it but I live in London so spend most of the time stopping & starting.

LegendDairy · 22/03/2021 18:01

Hate them. I like to be in control of the car.

as141 · 22/03/2021 18:03

It just doesn't feel like a fun driving experience. I don't really feel like I'm in control.. I feel like i am being driven from a to b by the car.

I was advised automatics are the future (had my last car and only car for 15 years), not into leasing etc so spent a significant amount buying this car outright. I have only had it a week so I know I need to give it a chance.

It's an audi a3, it also driving me mad that I can't seem to figure out how to display the speed limit on screen - someone please tell me this is possible and how? Because at the moment I am using the navigation on my phone simultaneously.

DP has a merc which I occasionally drove and assumed my a3 would be of the same standard.

Hill starts. I used to love my automatic. Plus it is like having a go cart as ComDummings (nice username Grin) says.

My manual car has some kind of hill start assist thing but it is rubbish and I find far more more dangerous than just doing a proper hill start.

NoSquirrels · 22/03/2021 18:04

What don’t you like? The feeling of waiting to shift gears?

For town driving it really is much much more relaxing. I can see if you like driving (I get no joy from it!) and you have longer journeys where you feel more in control doing active work then it might be not ‘fun’ (like I said, it’s not something I really get!) but it’s not bad just different.

middleager · 22/03/2021 18:04

I love mine!
I drove manuals for 25 years and got a DSG automatic.
I'm not very coordinated so it took ages to retrain my brain.

Even now, two years on, I know if I drive my manual, I'd be back reaching for the gears in my automatic!

It does not come naturally at all. If I don't drive for a week or so I really have to think about it. That said, I love my automatic. Persevere!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 22/03/2021 18:05

Don't really understand why all cars aren't automatic - surely that's progress in car technology??
Well they sort of will be, de facto, as electric vehicles aren’t manual. I prefer automatic because I’m driving just to get from A to B, usually with multiple children and/or animals and in limited time. DH prefers manual because he drives for ‘fun’ and the ‘experience’ 🙄 😂

UglyHoose · 22/03/2021 18:06

I love automatics. So much easier to drive.

Kpo58 · 22/03/2021 18:06

Next time i get driving lessons, I want to use an automatic.

The problems I had with manual were

  • coordination problems with trying to fiddle with the gear changes when trying to concentrate on the road
  • I couldn't hear the differences in the engine so I didn't know how much to raise my foot on the peddle before trying to change gear without it stalling constantly
Mrbob · 22/03/2021 18:07

Because I am lazy. If I was zooming around hills and bends manuals are fun but for the average day of driving through the city or the long straight outback roads of Australia a manual just adds work I can’t be arsed with. I love never having to do a hill start and worrying about clutch control. I never thought I would like them but I really do

middleager · 22/03/2021 18:07

I made sure my automatic has a proper handbrake though.

Can't get on with handbrake switches or assisted hill start tech mentioned upthread.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/03/2021 18:07

It's odd to start with when you're used to being involved in changing gear. Relax a little bit, go on the motorway a bit and it will be fine. I never thought I'd drive an auto but I do.
