Aren't VSCO Girls really into their sports labels? I'm sure someone with a teenager will be along to confirm/correct me shortly.

RubixCubix · 22/03/2021 13:51

Just asked DD (15) and she said chav is still commonly used or sometimes roadmen but she also would understand what townie meant.

She said visco girls are into brands but not necessarily sports one- she said hydro flasks, scrunchies and crocs, also backpacks apparently.

idontlikealdi · 22/03/2021 13:54

Roadman?

I think it depends where you are though.

Cowbells · 22/03/2021 14:28

I've heard DC use roadman of friends in head to toe Adidas

supersonicginandtonic · 22/03/2021 14:29

My DD told me her friends brother was a road man! I thought she meant he worked on the motorways 😂 she was so embarrassed 🙈

Crockof · 22/03/2021 14:31

Yes roadman mostly but also chav is definitely still used. Townie but apparently that's slightly different but dd can't explain clearly why.

VienneseWhirligig · 22/03/2021 14:33

DS says roadman or wannabe gangster. He's quite dismissive.

YogaLite · 22/03/2021 14:35

Omg, I think we need a dictionary of teenspeak, only ever heard of chavs myself Blush

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 22/03/2021 15:09

I'm heartened by the responses so far. Sports wear often worn by people who do little exercise.

bellagogosdead · 22/03/2021 15:52

Not sure I could bring my self to day 'Roadman' I am nearly 50! It would feel like I was trying way too hard.Grin
I will stick to townie or chav

My teen describes roadman as a look. I'm not sure I would ever use a label I wasnt sure about - I'd just describe what the person was wearing! Blush
Her friend looks a bit (what I would have called) goth but I think there is a different word for that now.

EvilOnion · 22/03/2021 16:01

I feel like I'm missing something, I would just say it's a person wearing sports gear!

fizbosshoes · 22/03/2021 16:04

@EvilOnion
Yes I would too.
Especially as I'm often being told I'm too old to use certain words or phrases! (Not even in public, but just in the house!) BlushBlush

My DCs call them ‘eshays’ (not in UK).

TroysMammy · 22/03/2021 16:20

The only name I heard in the 80s was Kappa slapper. However I do see men wearing Russell Athletic t-shirts and they look anything but. They don't look like a Russell either.

Bagelsandbrie · 22/03/2021 16:24

Definitely “roadman” round our way. But they tend to be young. I wouldn’t call someone in their 40s a roadman even if they wore head to toe branded sports stuff. Just seems weird!

Letsleepingdogslie8 · 22/03/2021 16:35

Where does “roadman” come from?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 22/03/2021 16:44

Roadman/ Roadie
Chav still seems to be current

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/03/2021 16:55

Gangsta or Rude boy

Another vote for Roadman.

I remember a thread a few years back when someone’s son was called a roadman and the OP didn’t know what it meant. I think there was some speculation that drugs had to be involved. I don’t think that’s the case now, at least it better bloody not be - owner of a teen roadman.

Valhalla17 · 22/03/2021 17:37

A roadman is someone who literally hangs about on street corners, usually selling drugs. They are usually on the street as home isnt a great place to be or because their parents arent actually parenting.

Valhalla17 · 22/03/2021 17:39

And someone who wears a lot of sports labels.....erm, sporty? I'm 40 and wear plenty of labels while WFH. I'm not a roadman. Grin
