Alcohol & Covid Jab

Did anyone stop drinking for a bit when they had their jab? I read guidance that suggests not drinking for 2 days before ( instant fail!) then for a couple of weeks after to protect your immune system. I do love my wine so this might be a chore!

Nope.

And no-one at the hospital gave that advice, nor is it in the leaflet that you're given after the jab. (Oxford Astra Zeneca)

Moonmelodies · 22/03/2021 10:31

If it's the Astra Zenica jab, rest assured there is alcohol in it, so you're not going without.

I drank the night before and I even said to the nurse that as soon as I went home I was planning on having a large glass of wine to get over the shock, she just said sounds like a good plan and she was jealous!!! 😂 😂 😂

I had some wine the weekend I had the AZ the booklet didn't say not to I don't think my half bottle of pinot ruined the vaccine !

2old4thissite · 22/03/2021 11:16

I doubt it, that's mainly antibiotics and things.
However, I felt so crap after az jab I didn't drink for about 5 days.
Broke the mold and set me up nicely for the dry March we are currently on.

Worknoplay · 22/03/2021 11:19

I have read that alcohol can suppress the immune response and it's probably better to avoid drinking (too much) before and after the jab. But it's not absolutely proven, and it's not in the official guidelines. There are articles all over the shops about it.

I won't drink when I get the jab, it's a small sacrifice (could be pointless I know but why risk it). I am not dependent on alcohol and going two weeks without is not big deal, is it.

2old4thissite · 22/03/2021 11:26

Shock? Don't be nervous.
The weirdest part to me was the big white tent and socially distanced queuing.
Barely felt the jab (honest) and was really quick - literally a 'jab' not like a prolonged injection.

HilaryBriss · 22/03/2021 13:24

Do you have a link to this guidance? I have certainly never heard this and wasn't told this when I had my jab on Saturday.

I am not alcohol dependant either but abstaining for 2 weeks will not be happening, a few glasses of wine at the weekend is one of the only pleasures left in life at the moment!

SpringisSpinning · 22/03/2021 14:19

I didn't know this either, I drank before would it help to abstain after?
I personally wouldn't risk a hangover and this on top

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/03/2021 14:27

Alcohol does suppress the immune system so I did abstain.

LadyDanburysCane · 22/03/2021 17:46

I’d read about not drinking too so I asked the GP who jabbed me and he said it was rubbish and there was no reason not to drink. 🍷

EternalOptimist7 · 22/03/2021 17:48

LadyDanburysCane I do believe I love your GP! And that’s a great username. Who was Lady Danbury?

OP posts:
BIWI · 22/03/2021 18:04

Lady Danbury

TakeYourFinalPosition · 22/03/2021 18:06

I asked my doctor, who said it was nonsense and to go home and have a nice glass of wine to relax afterwards.

So I did 🤷‍♀️

minniemoocher · 22/03/2021 18:12

I drank wine that evening because I felt grotty! Nobody mentioned not drinking- if they wanted us to avoid alcohol they would have verbally told us!

LadyDanburysCane · 22/03/2021 19:57
Lady Danbury was a character in the incredibly accurate historical documentary series on Netflix - Bridgerton. 😉

It was utter trash really but I LOVED it and needed a new name....

Lady Danbury would absolutely have had a drink after her covid jab!

BIWI · 22/03/2021 22:06

I loved it too! Complete fluff, but so well done.

SpringisSpinning · 23/03/2021 20:17

There's no way I would have coped with my jab reaction and alcohol.. I did drink the night before however, that's really interesting about not drinking a full three weeks before!

GPS may not keep up to date on this so I would personally urge some caution and do nothing to excess..

FictionalCharacter · 23/03/2021 20:24

excess alcohol is an immunosuppressant. Not the odd glass of wine or beer.

DuckonaBike · 23/03/2021 20:29

My DH and my brother had the jab on the same day. Brother is teetotal and had quite a bad reaction (fever, headache). My DH is an enthusiastic drinker Wine and was absolutely fine.

While this may not be a statistically significant sample, I’m still putting it out there.
