How far, exactly, can we travel next Monday?

I haven't seen my elderly parents since last July. Reason being, they live in Greater Manchester and so have only had three weeks out of lockdown (came out of lockdown at the start of July and went back intro restrictions at the end of July).

We live near Nottingham. We would like to meet them, outside, next Monday. We would travel by car.

Will that be ok?

I actually have no idea of the rules anymore, so id be really grateful if someone could update that knows!

The stay at home rule is due to end on the 29th, but people will be ‘encouraged’ to stay local. So it should be fine.

The following weekend we’re off to see Grandma for the day, she lives in the Forest of Dean and we’re in North London.

Thanks Simon, that's good to hear. I feel like I want to tell them where to stick their 'encouragement,' tbh!

Hope you have a fab day with your grandma Smile

This is the guidance (for England)

From 29 March:

People will be allowed to meet outside, either with one other household or within the "rule of six", including in private gardens

The stay at home rule will end, but the government will urge people to stay local as much as possible

Outdoor sport facilities will reopen, including golf courses and tennis and basketball courts, and formally organised outdoor sports can restart

Weddings attended by up to six people can take place in any circumstances

They never give distances. "Stay at home unless you've got one of these long list of reasons" is going to stop being law.

There have never been legal restrictions on the distance you can travel. It's going to be guidance/advice again, so you can't be fined for traveling - unless you are in Derbyshire or North Yorkshire where the police make up their own laws, of course.

An over-zealous police officer is my exact concern, @JellyBabiesSaveLives!

It will be crackers on Monday. Every beauty spot, coastal area etc will be mobbed!

Ghostlyglow · 22/03/2021 20:02

You beat me to it @JoyOrbison Grin Doesn't really bother me though tbh, I'll be at work.

Imnotbent · 22/03/2021 20:16

@JoyOrbison it was like this at the weekend down the river where I live. It would appear the coffee on a bench introduced on March 8th and the nice weather has brought people out in droves. It was really busy, anywhere that could be used as a seat was in use. The ice cream van was there and the takeaway food and coffee queues were long.

thecatsthecats · 22/03/2021 20:18

It says no overnight visits still, so we're travelling a similar distance ourselves to meet up with family outdoors and back again in the day.

SplendidSuns1000 · 22/03/2021 20:43

I think people will do a long-distance trip but will then stay local as normal. As long as you're still following social distancing, masks, etc then I think there's no reason for you not to do one long trip.

It is so confusing but I think as long as we are as careful as possible I don't see how it'll make any difference whether you travel or not at this point.

I hope you have a lovely day with them!

Champagneforeveryone · 22/03/2021 21:08

Have we actually had the confirmation it's still going ahead? I though it was dependent on the data etc rather than fixed in stone.

Spinningaround21 · 22/03/2021 21:26

Hospital admissions, inpatients and ventilated patients are all falling every single day and have been for ages. Vaccinations for now are still happening on a large scale so no reason why the roadmap can’t happen for the next stage surely.
