Anyone have a single bed with an under bed?

Can anyone help?

Looking for a single bed with a bed underneath which you can pull out. It’s for my tween daughters room for the days when she can finally have friends over to sleep.

The under bed will only be used occasionally, so it doesn’t have to be anything special.

I’ve seen the IKEA SLAKT bed which fits the bill - however, do IKEA have different size mattresses? The single mattress they suggest is slightly bigger than a traditional single mattress.

Does this mean I’ll have to buy all bedding and mattress from IKEA?

Any help appreciated. I suspect I am overthinking this.

Really useful to have one of these. The mattress isn’t though the best quality. We have this set up in the spare room so it’s only used occasionally but you only take out the under bed when needed which means day to day no space is taken up.

Brought ours from John Lewis

They are called truckle beds or trundle beds, if you Google that, there are loads of different kinds - so you're not restricted to IKEA.

With regard to bedding, just go into JL with the measurements and they will help you.

ikea have both uk and european sizes.
you need to check before you buy.
having said that, their matresses are good quality.
the bedding is close enough to uk size to fit uk covers.

We have two beds like this, both from a local independent pine shop. They’ve been fabulous. Ours the mattresses are ok, but I paid separately for those. Consider if you might want to use them as a “double” as you’ll need the under bed to come up to the same height if you do.

Moonstone1234 · 21/03/2021 08:55

I wasn’t keen at all but firstly we had bunk beds when the kids were younger. Never liked them. Changing the bed linen was a pain and putting the bed together took days (and dismantling them for a charity when they got too small)!

MangoBiscuit · 21/03/2021 08:57

We have this exact bed for my youngest. We had to get the mattress and sheets from Ikea. I think there are places you can buy standard European sized bedding, but I tend to buy ours from Ikea anyway.

OwlinaTree · 21/03/2021 08:57

We have these in the kids room, both beds take a standard mattress which makes it easier. We got them in an independent furniture shop, I've just had a look but I can't see the make. Might be worth a look in some independent shops though.

OwlinaTree · 21/03/2021 08:58

Ours go up to a double too.

GravityFalls · 21/03/2021 08:58

I have one - the bottom mattress is smaller than the top one but it’s a negligible issue for bedding as single bedding is fine on it. When they’re up together I use a king sized flat sheet over the whole bed (as that’s what I have to hand anyway); it’s be best with a king sized duvet but I don’t have a spare so a double is OK. Not worth worrying about bedding sizes for spare beds TBH, how often is it even an issue?

sandgrown · 21/03/2021 08:58

We had one of these for when friends stayed . It was great. Not sure if it came from M&S so not the cheapest but it literally just pulled out .

rosegoldwatcher · 21/03/2021 09:03

We have a wooden trundle bed, bought from M&S decades ago, originally for our younger son.

When we have a houseful of weekend guests it is pulled out to make a 6 ft wide bed. (In a small bedroom - so all bed, no room!)

The original mattresses were replaced a couple of years ago with pocket sprung ones, which are so deep that reinserting the under bed is a bit of a tight squeeze.

I can recommend the M&S ones - solid and robust.

ShirazSavedMySanity · 21/03/2021 09:18

The IKEA one is such a good price, I’m
Tempted to go for that. We already have a mattress for the top bed, but it’s standard size, worried about it not fitting.

The Slakt is 90 x 200 cm. Isn't that the size of a standard 3ft mattress?

The underbed storage drawers are a useful extra.
A couple of the reviewers say that the lower bed is creaky, though.

RevolvingPivot · 21/03/2021 09:35

We got my 8 year old one in December.

It's been used 3 times. Twice by me. No idea why she wanted it plus I liked to store toy boxes under there.

I got it online it was the most reasonably priced one I could find.

AnneElliott · 21/03/2021 09:36

I've got one but it's not from IKEA - got it from a local bed shop. I like then - really useful if you're not going to use them all the time.

Oldraver · 21/03/2021 09:56

DS has one in his room. It was DS1's but we've bought new mattress and refurbed it

It does make a double supposedly but we've never used it like that and the under mattress is shorter.

ShirazSavedMySanity · 21/03/2021 09:57

@rosegoldwatcher a standard single is 90 x 190

Would that 10cm pose a problem?

Yes I have this, and the mattresses are slightly different sizes. Other bedding does fit though, but not perfectly.

Id also say that the mattresses are quite hard. Ive had to buy a good quality topper to make it comfortable.

Namechangedyetagainandagain · 21/03/2021 11:52

We have the Slakt with a normal single mattress on the top (got an Ikea one to fit the bottom). There‘s just a gap at the bottom that you can’t see when there’s a duvet etc on top. If you pull it back, this is the gap (mouse for scale - closest thing I could grab!) Never been a problem (though obviously wouldn’t have this set up if there was any chance of a baby getting stuck in the gap but we haven’t got one, so that’s ok!)

Anyone have a single bed with an under bed?
lucillevanpelt · 21/03/2021 11:58

@ShirazSavedMySanity I have PM’d you.

ShirazSavedMySanity · 21/03/2021 12:02

@Namechangedyetagainandagain
Thank you, this is so helpful!
She’s almost 13 so seeing that gap makes me see we can do it and keep the mattress she has.

Thank you, problem solved!

And @lucillevanpelt you’re so kind x
