I always thought the 'baby' Madonna was keeping was an actual baby she was pregnant with but DP insists it's her boyfriend she's keeping. Who's right?

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/03/2021 21:18

You are.

Crosstrainer · 20/03/2021 21:19

You are, surely? “He said that he’s going to marry me - and we can raise a little family....”

megletsecond · 20/03/2021 21:19

I think it's a real baby. It took me many years to settle on this decision.

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 20/03/2021 21:20

I was just going to quote that! Continuing ‘maybe we’ll be all right but it’s a sacrifice’.

Sacrifice for the girl, obv.

DramaAlpaca · 20/03/2021 21:20

You are. She's keeping an actual baby and making a family. Listen to the lyrics, it's all in there.

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:21

Yes I've always assumed she's pregnant

StealthPolarBear · 20/03/2021 21:21

"in trouble" was literally how it was described.
She added the "deep"

OutsideTheWhiteHouse · 20/03/2021 21:21

‘The one you warned me all about’

Pregnancy. You’re right!

Boopeedoop · 20/03/2021 21:22

It was based around a teen pregnancy according to Google.

AdaFuckingShelby · 20/03/2021 21:22

You're right. She's in trouble deep.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/03/2021 21:23

She's pregnant.

VettiyaIruken · 20/03/2021 21:24

She has a boyfriends dad's not keen on. She's young and pregnant (we're in an awful mess, I'm in trouble deep)

Boyfriend is stepping up and they will raise the child together (we're going to raise a little family)

Friends are advising her that she's too young to raise a child and should put the baby up for adoption. (But my friends keep telling me to give it up
Saying I'm too young, I oughta live it up)

Papa I know you're going to be upset
'Cause I was always your little girl
But you should know by now
I'm not a baby
You always taught me right from wrong
I need your help, daddy please be strong
I may be young at heart
But I know what I'm saying
The one you warned me all about
The one you said I could do without
We're in an awful mess
And I don't mean maybe, please
Papa don't preach I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, hm
I'm gonna keep my baby, hm
He says that he's going to marry me
We can raise a little family
Maybe we'll be all right
It's a sacrifice
But my friends keep telling me to give it up
Saying I'm too young, I oughta live it up
What I need right now is some good advice, please
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, hm
I'm gonna keep my baby, ooh ooh
Daddy, daddy if you could only see
Just how good he's been treating me
You'd give us your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love
We are in love (in love), so please (so)
Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep

Liquoricecreamrock · 20/03/2021 21:24

Great song

RubyFakeLips · 20/03/2021 21:25

I suppose he could say it’s open to interpretation but “I’m keeping my baby” is a repeated lyric!

Quartz2208 · 20/03/2021 21:26

You are it is well known to be about teen pregnancy

mnahmnah · 20/03/2021 21:26

If you watch the music video, it’s clear she’s unexpectedly pregnant

Aquamarine1029 · 20/03/2021 21:27

Your boyfriend is a tit. The song is most definitely about a baby.

LagneyandCasey · 20/03/2021 21:28

Definitely a baby. In the video you see her telling her dad and he walks out, obviously shocked and upset. If it was just because she got a boyfriend he wouldn't react like that.

Such a good song. 80s Madonna was wonderful. Hit after hit.

MajesticWhine · 20/03/2021 21:30

Your DP is wrong. It is not even slightly ambiguous.

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 20/03/2021 21:30

It's a real baby, although I naively used to think the same as your boyfriend when the song came out (and I was a teenager)

Nitpickpicnic · 20/03/2021 21:51

Why would the father be Preaching? Because sex out of wedlock is a sin in their religion. It’s a religious word. Why would he be preaching about a boyfriend he didn’t like?

The religious theme is strong, and carried through to her friends pushing for an abortion or having the baby adopted out. There’s no sense to the religious theme if she’s not actually preggers.

Tell your partner that no teenage Catholic girl was ever in the tiniest amount of doubt about this song! Having to have this conversation with our dads was our greatest fear, and played on our minds a lot for many years!

TherapistInATabard · 20/03/2021 21:52

Oh bless him, I used to think it meant boyfriend too. But then I was only 10 when it came out 😂

VenusTiger · 20/03/2021 21:52

Interesting as I was agreeing with baby being that she's pregnant but having just read through all the lyrics, she's pleading with her father to give them his blessing - she's also saying, whatever you say, I've made up my mind, I'm not dumping him, I'm keeping him.
She talks about marriage and raising a family, she doesn't once suggest that she's staying with him because she's already started a family - so.... I've swtiched, 'hey dad, whatever you think of my bf, he's my babe/baby and I'm sticking with him'.
Sorry OP.

TheDogsMother · 20/03/2021 21:52

I've always thought it is a teen/young pregnancy and real baby. It's the start a little family bit.

TherapistInATabard · 20/03/2021 21:53

I absolutely love the video, it’s one of my favourites from Madonna
