Hi

Currently pregnant with second and hoping for a third after but after that I really don't get on with hormonal contraception and even the copper coil didn't fully agree with me so am
Wanting to get sterilised.

How's the recovery? Didn't you feel any different?

I'll be 30 when I give birth to my second so know for me personally i definitely don't want any more than 3 and know I definitely want to have it done just curious if it effects you in different ways

Thanks Smile

I am sterilised. I had it done aged 29 while I was having my fourth c section. To be honest I don't remember anything about the recovery as I was recovering from my c section and the pain from that overtook anything I would have felt from the sterilisation. The only downside I would say is that my periods are now extremely heavy and more painful than before, but it's something I can live with, safe in the knowledge I won't fall pregnant again.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/03/2021 21:23

I am, at 27, and it was the best decision ever. Very easy surgery and never had any issues. My periods were always light and they didn't change at all. 21 years later and I would do it 100 times over.

THNG5 · 20/03/2021 21:29

I'm now 40 and had my tubes cut during the c section of my third when I was 38 but I'm the 1 in 200 for whom it didn't work and had it done again during the c section of my fourth 7 months ago.
The only downside is heavier periods although not painful in my case.

No. After years on the pill followed by three children in four years, DH decided it was his turn to take responsibility and booked himself in for a vasectomy.

Missing the point I know, but just wanted to point out there is another option.

Borogroves · 20/03/2021 22:48

I can't comment on the recovery as I had it done whilst having other abdominal surgery. I can say that I'm so happy I did it and love that I have not had to think about contraception since.

Soontobe60 · 20/03/2021 22:49

Sterilised at 35. Had 2 days off work to recover from the anaesthetic. No further pain.

Draculahhh · 20/03/2021 22:52

Same as another poster, I got sterilised during my c section with number 4. It took me a lot longer to recover than with previous sections and my periods have been heavier since. On the plus side it has been so worth it, just for the peace of mind that comes with knowing for sure you're done with babies now.

pabloescobarselasticband · 20/03/2021 23:03

My periods became very heavy and painful.

faithfulbird20 · 21/03/2021 04:21

I haven't been sterilised but find this thread interesting. Just curious when would you like your third? What age?

Deedeedocket · 21/03/2021 08:19

I’ve had a hysterectomy for medical reasons but i was 41. Doctor told me I would need about 4 weeks to recover but in all honesty I took it easy and was up and about in 2.

Brandaris · 21/03/2021 08:28

11 weeks ago during c section for my 2nd. Was much quicker and easier recovery than the emergency section for my first. Obviously too soon to know if it’s affected my periods. Dh will also probably have the snip to make sure as we really don’t want to be the one in 200!

If only I could convince my partner! He's got a severe phobia of needles and does he best to avoid them... even doesn't get his bloods taken when he should etc. So it's a tough one and after a few heated conversations I decided I would take on the responsibility once again and have it done myself. At least then if anything ever happened to our relationship I would still be safe from pregnancy.... well as long as I wasn't one of the 1 in 200 😅

Well we are mad and will probably try for a third baby when current one is out and around 3/4 months old but I do breast feed and have suffered recurring miscarriage so will be great full for it happening at all! But ideally no later than 32 to be pregnant again, not bashing anyone who's older having children it's just my personal preference and works better with my career and quite fancy being a "younger grandmother" if it happens like that. Would love to still join in with the kids.

Ok Interesting! I didn't realise it could make your periods so heavy! I suffer with pretty bad periods and the copper coil was terrible for me only joy of it was the moment I took it out I could get pregnant quickly.

Will probably try once more for getting partner to have the snip but no doubt will be down to me in the end.

Fingers crossed this pregnancy and labour goes better than the first anyways or it might be the snip for me soon Grin

Thanks for your experience can I please be cheeky and ask did you have sex in the time you weren't meant to?

Our bodies are actually insane and amazing that they can (annoying in some cases!) fix themselves back together

Bet it was quite the shock being pregnant again!

No. I gave birth and had my tubes cut end of May 2019 and found out I was pregnant just before Xmas 2019 so nearly 7 months after. They tell you to be careful for 3 months after the procedure

yearinyearout · 21/03/2021 09:09

Yes. Recovery was fine but I don't react well to anaesthetics so took me a good while to come round and feel normal. I had quite a bit of pain from the gas they pump into you, I remember my shoulders really hurting for a couple of days.

SuperPixie247 · 21/03/2021 09:13

I was sterilised at 26 after 1 DS. Best decision ever.
The procedure waa totally fine, I wasn't in recovery very long at all and then home. The day after I had stomach ache and was quite tender. I had to be careful sitting up and down, exercise and stretching was a no no and I didn't even attempt to pick my DS up! I had it done on a Friday and was fine for work Monday (office role). If it had been a weekday, I would have had the next day off though.

Good luck with your decision!

Borogroves · 21/03/2021 14:45

Sterilisation itself won't make your periods heavier. However they often do become heavier afterwards due to not being on hormonal contraception.

I've never been on any kind of hormonal contraception. Whether it was a coincidence that my periods went heavier, I'm not sure but my gynaecologist told me it was likely to be linked. I get cyclical mastalgia too since having it done.
halfwaythrough2 · 21/03/2021 17:42

@crystalcherry87
Interesting thanks for the extra info! Will definitely research this all a bit more as one of the other things Making me want to do it is because I've always suffered with womb issues, cysts, pid. Heavy periods but when on the copper coil it was pretty brutal. Haven't had hormones for about 4 years now and really don't want to do that ever again.
