School shoes for man boy

mamaduckbone · 20/03/2021 20:28

Help! Does anyone have any bright ideas for where I can buy school shoes for my 15yo son!
He's size 11 so needs men's shoes, but walks a mile to school and back each day and still plays football in the playground. The ones he's got are from Office but have such a thin sole that he's worn them through. They've got to look the part though and he's not easily pleased, in true teenage boy style.

I got really, really nice ones from Clark’s for my massive 6’1” 13yo. Was the only place open.
Men’s section. We’re good price too and he was very happy. He plays footy at breaks so they are sturdy.

My 16yo DS wears doc martens

LockdownCheeseToastie · 20/03/2021 20:31

Clark’s. Adult range not kids. Or doc martins.

My DS wears adidas superstars in black. They are shoe, with trainer cushioning and come in adult sizes.

Doc Martens - the totally plain black ones sold as service industry shoes, much cheaper than normal ones but just as hard wearing

None of the schools near us would allow vans or Adidas, all require proper polishable shoes so be cautious with the trainer options (also no good for future job interviews/funerals/meals out etc, teens do need a pair of proper shoes).

Cadet supplies - look at parade shoes. There are a number of sites.
I discovered this as DD was doing cadets and needing boots, just as her younger brother's feet hit size 11 as he had barely turned 12. Luckily they haven't grown much more and he's still size 11/12 age 15.

The price of these isn't as great as I recall, but it was more than a couple of years back now I think about it!

This one looks great value, seems to be end of line as only size 11 and 12 in stock:

Another option from the same website:

M&S air flex range, they lasted a whole year playing football every lunchtime and walking to school. But not very trendy.

mamaduckbone · 20/03/2021 21:24

Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly Adidas and Vans wouldn't be acceptable - shoes have to have a proper separate heel and he wouldn't be seen dead in kickers Grinbut I will look at Doc Martens.

Mine wear black nike air force ones. As do all the kids tbh. Not one of them wears proper school shoes.

mamaduckbone · 20/03/2021 21:33

I should wish bairnsmum - trainers are an absolute no no. The suggestion that school shoes bought now might last for future job interviews has made me smile - they will be lucky if they make it to the end of the year.

Sorry, I'll bebno help here then. Our schools have never made children wear proper shoes thankfully! Buying trainers for teenage boys is hard enough 😂

Seriously, look at parade shoes. Proper lace up traditional shoes, decent price (compared to some of the other suggestions up thread) and made to last.

I also recommend Docs.

I used Treads for the first time this year for DS2. They claim to be unbreakable and will replace them if they wear through when they're in the same size. Not representive this year due to lockdown, but DS2's still look brand new and he'd usually be on pair 3 by now.

I've tried clicky link but not working.

Treads[https://www.treads-shoes.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw3duCBhCAARIsAJeFyPUsDr8RRYg7L8yyV7SbLu4LsLMKE69ZrAgzBTqPXctUlb8Jr4uYvRwaAoD6EALw_wcB]

CommanderBurnham · 21/03/2021 20:12

We have treads. Timberlands are pretty indestructible too if they have anything suitable.

PigletJohn · 21/03/2021 20:59

size 11, in "traditional" styles, available with a thick rubber sole:

Good value

They do a "prestige" range which are better quality and mostly have leather soles, but don't stand up to wet weather or kicking about.

If you get on their mailing list they will bombard you with special offers.

They tend to be rather old fashioned but might suit a school uniform or an interview.

mamaduckbone · 22/03/2021 19:04

We used Treads when he was at primary school (size 10 in year 6!) but he wouldn't be seen dead in them now, unfortunately! The Samuel Windsor site is really good value and definitely worth a look - thanks.

OP posts:
RestingPandaFace · 22/03/2021 19:08

I wouldn’t bother with the Samuel Windsor ones DH goes through a pair every 6 months and he only wears them in the office.

Another vote here for Treads - 12 month Indestructible Guarantee
