Recognition at work

Sorry for a boring work question on a weekend. What sort of recognition schemes do your workplace offer and what do you/would you like? What don't you like? I'm doing a bit of research for an idea I've been asked to put forward at work. I dislike gimmicky things myself.

Ours is financial based. You get money credited to you account and can buy items or vouchers with it. Each award is also valid for a couple of years so you can save up if you like.

We get a yearly review which is linked to a bonus we also have a scheme where you can send some one a thank you or a star which has a monetary value to it which can be used for a selection of items or for vouchers to several shops. We also get a voucher award after 15, 20 and then every 10yrs of being with the company.

Should add the amount you can award someone has been decreased as the system was being abused and costing a fortune

Nothing, zilch, nada.... turn up on time, work, repeat, paid at the end of the month. (retail)

That's interesting, thanks. What sort of things do you get awarded credit/money/stars for? Does it happen regularly or is it rare?

Can be anything, so a good outcome, going above and beyond the day job, general company thank you’s, just because someone felt you needed recognition. I have sent some for when individuals have worked really hard but maybe not for the result we wanted, for a moral boost, demonstrating one of the company goals. It varies between teams, some it is quite rare some very generous. I would say probably get something once a quarter.

However that is the downside, it is quite vague and some teams awarded them to their friends and got nominated in return, hence the limits coming in...

Just random appreciation with a thank you card, small gift and a voucher placed on your desk or given to you in a company meeting.

No set timing to it, but if they recognise that someone has been putting a lot of extra hours in or really stepped up to a challenge then you sometimes got one.

Previously there was a 'employee of the quarter' award which again was vouchers and colleagues put forward people with a reason and then management decided who got it.

Personally I prefer the random ones to the quarterly ones. It fells less forced and more like you're actually appreciated.

We have a nomination system. So if you have done a good job for someone or gone above and beyond on a project they will nominate you, this will get approved by HOD. They are given out fairly often. Usually at least 1 person gets 1 each month. I normally get about 3 a year.

Yearly bonus linked to performance.

We have that points thing and I've had it a couple of times in the last few years but to be honest this does not motivate me at all. I have points I earned in December that I havent even looked to redeem on anything.

The latest is to be given an hour or two off work. After a busy few weeks I was told this week I could take a half day one day this week (with full pay and without using annual leave) . This has probably been my favourite reward.
