Do you prefer books or a kindle?

I just love books. I have a kindle which is great for holidays and I tend to get 99p offers on it.

I love seeing a bookcase full of books and I like the smell, feel and anticipation when I get a new 'proper' book.

Trying to be more minimalistic and not buy things but I can't help it with books. A day out in Waterstones with a coffee will be my ultimate pleasure when I can go. I know it is open but I want ' the whole experience'. 😬

Just wondering if any book lovers prefer reading on the kindle? It annoys me that I can't flick back to a page!

Even my kids prefer books and won't read on the kindle so I am not sure if it necessarily a generation thing!

I'm with you. Reading, for me, is as much about the feel of the book in my hand as it is about the book's content. I love bookshops. I have a Kindle but I only use it on holidays.

Just had this discussion with DD1. She won't read things on the Kindle. I'm not keen on it myself and books are so tactile. Should maybe have read The Mirror and the Light on the Kindle though, it's rather heavy to read the hardback.

FizzyPink · 18/03/2021 21:15

I never re-read books and I hate waste so for me a kindle is perfect although I do appreciate how nice it is to have an actual book. I also read very quickly so find it great for holidays where I’d previously need to take 3 or 4 books for a week to keep me occupied

Books every time. Enough of my life is screen based without yet another. The physicality of books is part of the joy.

BabyBee93 · 18/03/2021 21:15

Books all day long. I've got a kindle that sits unused in a drawer and maybe read an ebook every once in a blue moon if I'm on a train etc but oh my god you can't beat a proper paper book!

I read lots of literature and non fiction so I love having pages to annotate so maybe that's why I can't convert to the kindle life

My house is filled with them yet I won't stop buying more Grin

Oooh also this very much!

Chasingsquirrels · 18/03/2021 21:17

Kindle.
I didn't think I'd like it, loved books etc. NEVER read paper books now.

CovidKingfisher · 18/03/2021 21:17

Proper books every time, I spend enough time on screens.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 18/03/2021 21:19

I was completely on the side of proper books until about 6 years ago, when we moved abroad. Not only could I not take my books, I couldn't easily get English books. Kindle was my saviour.

I only tend to buy second hand fiction books now, m rest on Kindle. Or library. Non fiction books are different.

I buy my children proper books though.

QueenOfLabradors · 18/03/2021 21:19

Real actual books. I don't have a Kindle, as I'm a dedicated anti Amazon person... Instead I have a Kobo ereader which tends to have the same stuff at about the same price including the freebies and the 99ps. This is fine for holiday books, back when jumping on a plane for a week somewhere in the Med was a thing that was easy to do. At home with snuggly fireside chair or loungy outside garden chair or bed with well positioned reading light all available, I've reverted back to paper books.

Takingabreakagain · 18/03/2021 21:20

It's got to be books for me too. I rarely read one twice so I just borrow them from the library. This has been a bit of an issue over the last year as it's been shut on and off. So I tried reading on my husband's kindle but just found I couldn't get into the storyline or focus as easily.

holyshitdude · 18/03/2021 21:20

Definitely real books, I also love the sight of a full bookcase, I tried reading on a kindle and it just didn't feel right.

CoffeeRunner · 18/03/2021 21:20

Books 100%.

I also look at a screen most of the day at work. I don’t need even more time staring at a screen.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/03/2021 21:21

Kobo Clara with the overdrive app. I never thought I’d use an e reader.

CantBeAssed · 18/03/2021 21:21

My preference would be books...but i have to admit i love the kindle when reading in bed...

Mistymountain · 18/03/2021 21:21

I've had a macular hole followed by cataracts and find it very difficult to read normal books. The kindle's been invaluable (plus the fact you can read it in the dark)! I've still got bookcases full of useless books.

BertieBotts · 18/03/2021 21:21

I used to prefer books but now that I have small children I prefer the kindle. I can read it one handed and I don't need a light. So it's great while breastfeeding etc.

It doesn't feel like a screen - I have the Paperwhite version. I wouldn't get the tablet version as I don't want it to be like a screen.

I flick back pages by setting a bookmark on the page I'm currently on and then I can come back to it.

The thing that I miss is second hand books - I find them very expensive on the kindle so it feels like a gamble to buy anything in case it turns out to be crap. And I don't like not being able to pass useful books on when I've finished with them! I miss that.

I like that I can search and highlight in the book.

Books
Never succumbed to a Kindle and can't see myself succumbing either

QueenofDestruction · 18/03/2021 21:22

I prefer a kindle, i have over a thousand books on mine as I am always buying kindle books, so I can take a library with me wherever I go. I also used to have books everywhere and now my home is nice and minimalist. My kindle is waterproof so easy to read in the bath and pool.

Like the previous reader I read quickly and my goodread trackers says I read 203 books last year, where would I keep those. I love my kindle and would not go back to paper books.

AntonMeyersNo1Fan · 18/03/2021 21:22

Kindle - I’m reading actual books at the moment and hate the faff of finding my glasses, then finding the reading light for when dp falls asleep, then I lose my page and finally the clunk when it lands in my face as I doze off... Grin

MoreMorelos · 18/03/2021 21:24

Books - the feel and the smell!

GreenBalaclava · 18/03/2021 21:24

I was given a kindle by DH and felt very uncertain about it - I thought nothing would replace the feel of a book etc. I am totally converted now, and absolutely love my kindle.

MrsMackesy · 18/03/2021 21:25

Books 100%

GalesThisMorning · 18/03/2021 21:25

I have a house filled with real books but, to my surprise, I am a total kindle convert! It's my number one possession. I borrow books from the library on it via the library website. I'm never ever bored, theres always a new book to read Smile

I like the backlight on the kindle and I like to make the font nice and big. No more struggling with poor lighting. No more worrying about what book to bring on holiday or for a long train ride. No more having to stop reading in bed when DH goes to sleep.

I love it

Knittingnanny · 18/03/2021 21:27

Both equally as they both have their place in my life. I’m a life long library user, 40 years of teaching infants to read and always have a pile of books by my bed.
But about 7 years ago I saw someone reading a kindle on holiday and got one for my birthday. I love being able to carry it around with me in my handbag, can enlarge the print, instantly read the next in a series and get recommendations based on my purchases.
Being left handed it isn’t quite so easy to change the page if you are using it one handed though.
I wouldn’t be without it but would never give up the “ real” books.
What I do find slightly irritating is some of the ladies at one of my pre lockdown groups who dismiss the kindle out of hand despite not even trying it out.
Room for both
