Do you prefer books or a kindle?

I just love books. I have a kindle which is great for holidays and I tend to get 99p offers on it.

I love seeing a bookcase full of books and I like the smell, feel and anticipation when I get a new 'proper' book.

Trying to be more minimalistic and not buy things but I can't help it with books. A day out in Waterstones with a coffee will be my ultimate pleasure when I can go. I know it is open but I want ' the whole experience'. 😬

Just wondering if any book lovers prefer reading on the kindle? It annoys me that I can't flick back to a page!

Even my kids prefer books and won't read on the kindle so I am not sure if it necessarily a generation thing!

It's a shame isn't it!

Jojoanna · 19/03/2021 05:40

Kindle. I love books and would spend hours at a library as a young girl. However kindles are light and convenient, they store so many books and great for my eyesight ! I have the paper white so can read easily in bed at night . Books are too heavy for me nowadays. Miss browsing in the library and bookshop though .

Ulysses · 19/03/2021 06:14

My Kindle is invaluable to me now that my eyesight has deteriorated. I always read at bedtime and it doesn't matter how dim my lamp is. I get most of books for 99p from Kindle Deals.

I do love physical books though and will buy hardback reference books. I bought a book on fashion recently but it's unreadable for me as the font is tiny so I can only really look at the pictures.

E reader. I download audio books version at the same time. I Iike listening at bedtime, I set the timer to turn it off in 15 minutes or so, then I fall asleep listening.

Orgyofsausages · 19/03/2021 06:22

Books every time. They look so lovely on my shelves. It's nice when they are gifts too, with dedications written in the front.

Hufflepuffsunite · 19/03/2021 06:29

Books!! Absolutely agree - reading a proper book is a much more enjoyable experience. I do like the kindle when travelling though as it saves lugging books about.

exLtEveDallas · 19/03/2021 06:36

Kindle. I currently have 738 read books on mine (and 3 waiting)

I re-read books, and love series of books. Over the last lockdown I’ve re-read the John Connolly ‘Charlie Parker’ series and have discovered nuance that I missed before. The Kindle also means that I have tried authors (In the 99p deals) that I wouldn’t have looked at in a bookshop (for example Damien Boyd, who writes a crime series based in a place I love to holiday. I was intrigued by the first, and ended up buying another 6 - I wouldn’t have done that at 8.99 in Waterstones)

FireBelliedToad · 19/03/2021 06:58

I love books, but DH doesn't want the lights on after the Dc have gone to bed so if I want to read, I use the kindle app on my phone or iPad. It's also easier to read when I used to take the Dc to activities or on the bus. I've settled for buying my DC books. Oh and we have no bookshelf space left!

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 19/03/2021 07:03

Books, have a Kindle Fire largely for travel, to find out things such as when some museum is open, or directions.

A work colleague also noted that when on holiday you can leave a book as a place marker on a hotel lounger, which you would never do with a tablet.

Justme10 · 19/03/2021 07:41

I love my kindle, I like that I can read books from authors I've never heard of for cheaper especially if I don't enjoy the book and I think kindle unlimited is great for that as well.
But I will buy an actual book from authors that I know I enjoy reading because holding a real book adds to the experience of reading for me.

LApprentiSorcier · 19/03/2021 07:46

I like to have both. Kindle is good for cheap books that are unlikely to make it onto my list of favourites. Also easier to read in bed.

I wouldn't want to be without my bookshelves from an aesthetic perspective and I do enjoy the feel of a 'real' book. Also, you can read real books wherever you like without worrying about breaking them - I wouldn't take my Kindle to the beach (sand damage) or cram it into a bursting handbag, for example.

ginoclocksomewhere · 19/03/2021 07:55

I actually love both! I'd carry a suitcase full of books on holiday if it weren't for my kindle.
I love Kindle unlimited, and as someone that does re-read books, I've bought some in hard copy that I really enjoyed.
Having said that, there is nothing like holding a book in your hands!

treeeeemendous · 19/03/2021 08:04

I only ever use my kindle on holidays which is sadly when I do most of my reading these days. Much prefer a book where possible though.

Teenageromance · 19/03/2021 08:08

Which version of kindle would you recommend?

Ylvamoon · 19/03/2021 08:16

I love my kindle, it's easy and convenient for my everyday reading. Most of them I only read once and would have been simply paperbacks in the past, not to be kept / collected.

I also have a great collection of hardbacks, rare & special edition books in my bookshelf for reading, apriciating and enjoying!

SoupDragon · 19/03/2021 08:19

I'm a total Kindle convert. I don't see it as "another screen" to me it is a book.

MyCatLovesFish · 19/03/2021 08:58

Kindle, partly because I used to have books stacked everywhere plus a whole wall of shelves and changing that to one small device was a huge plus when I downsized.

Also now I am older my eyes have deteriorated. I have reading glasses but the focus is never 100%. With the kindle I just increase the font size and with the backlight too (I have the paper white) I'm good to go. Can't remember when I last read a print book.

I am also an avid reader (at least a book every couple of days) so I get good value from my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

VinterKvinna · 19/03/2021 09:01

@BertieBotts

I used to prefer books but now that I have small children I prefer the kindle. I can read it one handed and I don't need a light. So it's great while breastfeeding etc.

It doesn't feel like a screen - I have the Paperwhite version. I wouldn't get the tablet version as I don't want it to be like a screen.

I flick back pages by setting a bookmark on the page I'm currently on and then I can come back to it.

The thing that I miss is second hand books - I find them very expensive on the kindle so it feels like a gamble to buy anything in case it turns out to be crap. And I don't like not being able to pass useful books on when I've finished with them! I miss that.

I like that I can search and highlight in the book.

You can return kindle books to amazon if you dont like them
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/03/2021 09:02

Happy to use either but I have a preference for a physical book.

But my favourite is audiobook.

I listen while I work, drive, shop, walk, laze in bed, cook. I could probably do a book a week minimum on only audiobooks.

I use my library's Audiobook service and borrow them.

StarlightLady · 19/03/2021 09:02

Prior to lockdown, l travelled a lot for work and find my Kindle invaluable. I can add to its library almost anywhere.

When l’m at home though, l still prefer a “proper book”.

Norwaydidnthappen · 19/03/2021 09:02

Books, our house is filled with them. I’ve never owned a kindle.

queenofthenorthwest · 19/03/2021 09:04

Op your post is exactly how I feel. Love sitting in the bookshop with a coffee!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/03/2021 09:05

I like both, wouldn’t be without either.

At the moment, though, I have stacks of ‘non-keeper’ paperbacks waiting to go to charity shops. All our bookshelves are stuffed anyway, some are double-stacked.

I like my Kindle for reading in bed without disturbing dh, for sticking in my bag to read on the bus or waiting at the dentist’s, for taking on holiday (I need at least 4 books for a week), for very fat novels (too heavy to read in bed) and for any book I’d like to read, but that has a very small font. So easy to enlarge on the Kindle.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 19/03/2021 09:12

Kindle now - I can increase the font of the page very easily - the print in books is just too small for me to read comfortable these days.

RedcurrantPuff · 19/03/2021 09:12

Kindle
