Notifications and emails - turning them off?

I hope this has g been done to death.. but I wondered if it was possible to switch off the emails you get from when people reply to threads? And there's notifications at the top and you don't know till you click on your profile if it's a message or notifications. I did have a look around settings but couldn't see anything!

If you have a message it will show a number in a different coloured oval

In the email there's a link at the bottom to change your settings to stop them being sent
