Eye and facial pain

whatisthispain · 18/03/2021 06:46

Sorry to post here but haven't had a reply in health and I'm desperate !
I was Wondering if anyone can help me understand what is wrong with my face !

I seem to have attacks of pain, I get tender pain at the back of my eye (it alternates each eye) and whichever eye it's affecting my jaw on the same side hurts, mainly only the joint. I have to open my mouth wide to kind of stretch the pain out. Sometimes my teeth get involved, not often though. Also my neck on the same side will hurt. It all just feels really tender and like pressure. Almost like migraine but in my eye/face. When it happens it's always for a few days at a time and then I don't get it again for a while.
Sometimes my ear hurts, it is blocked and I'm waiting for a referral to ent but would a blocked ear cause all this pain ?? I get tinnitus too and also when I lay down flat and turn my head to the left I get severe dizziness - I don't know if this is related though!
I'm hoping ent can explain what it is but then again they might just want to suction my ear and send me on my way!

I hope someone can explain or has had similar as it's really affecting me now I'm sick of being in pain!
Normal otc paracetamol doesn't touch it only codeine helps with the pain

So sorry you’re getting this. It sounds just like sinusitis to me. The pain and pressure. Also radiating to blocked ears and down into eustachian tubes which can be found below the ear into the neck.

I suffer with chronic sinusitis and you’ve described every symptom I get.
Try a strong over the counter decongestant although these sometimes make it worse if taken for a few days. Steroid nasal drops from gp are good. Also inhalation of olbas oil.
I also take an antihistamine as I find mine is allergy based. Currently caused by the beginning of tree pollen season.

Hope it improves soon

I agree with PP. It sounds like a sinus issue to me

Either sinus or TMJ - jaw clenching or grinding

whatisthispain · 18/03/2021 08:32

Thanks for the replies. I did wonder if it's sinus related but I don't get a blocked nose etc, does this always have to be present ?
I do clench my teeth at night I've noticed this only recently

I would also consider whether it is tribe I also neuralgia. You need to consult your GP.

ElizaLaLa · 18/03/2021 09:00

Google to see if trigeminal nerve headache sounds like what you have.

Dowser · 18/03/2021 09:05

If I get trigeminal nerve pain like that, I take a homeopathic remedy which usually sorts it in a day or two.
(Oh shucks! I forgot homeopathy doesn’t work. )
Well it works for me, so I must be wired wrong!
Other suggestions would be to see an osteopath or someone who works in the field of active balance.
I have a great guy in the north east if you live in the area

whatisthispain · 20/03/2021 07:51

I've had a look at trigeminel and don't think it's that as it's not shooting pains and doesn't get set off with touch.
I've woke up this morning with face ache again, also my jaw joint is hurting so I'm not sure if it's sinus related or tmd!

Sounds like migraines. It took me ages to realise they were migraines as the pain was in my face and I had no aura or vomiting. Triptans from the GP have a miraculous effect on the pain.

QuinoaAvo · 20/03/2021 09:56

I get this exactly. I do have TMJ (jaw clenching) which doesn't help. I also think sinusitis. The pain can be like a migraine too. I'm going to look for pain relief options today. I also findhaving a couple of extra hours sleep at night and if I can a couple of hours siesta in the day helps when I have an attack.

HermionePotter123 · 14/04/2021 23:29

Sorry to butt in, but was just wondering can tmjd cause sinus issues or eye pain? I'm getting pain in my cheekbone (feels like I've been punched) as well as eye pain on the same side that I have tmjd on.Unsure if it's an actual sinus problem or the tmjd. I did have some nasal congestion this morning but cleared up and the cheekbone/eye pain onky started late this evening. Pollen count is high today so not sure if that could be a factor too

Mummyof2dc · 27/04/2021 16:39

@Hermionepotter123 I am getting the exact same as you. I also have tmjd diagnosis . It’s hard to tell if it’s a migraine, sinus or coming from my messed up jaw (same side). Maybe pollen but I’m not sure with that one.. had a bout of the same symptoms last year that went away but now have made a return. It’s a painnn😞 I am due to see the maxi facial again soon so I’m going ask about it.

HermionePotter123 · 27/04/2021 17:07

It's a crappy thing to have isn't it @Mummyof2dc. My tmjd used to only be one sided but now it's affecting the jaw joint on the other side now too. Do you get toothache/gumache with yours too? Fingers crossed maxfax will be able to help

Chatanooga1 · 27/04/2021 17:18

I have had sinus problems including dental sinus and more recently had a blocked Eustachian tube which caused me severe pain for three weeks.

I tried a combination of things but what really gave me relief was punching my nose and then blowing gently to make my ears pop.

My left ear resisted popping for a couple of weeks but then gradually I could feel something moving and it gave a soft squelch which helped tremendously.

Over the following week I was able to pop it and I now do so at least once a day to help keep them clear.

I found this chap very informative -

Mummyof2dc · 27/04/2021 17:48

@HermionePotter123 yeah mine is on the left. Wouldn’t say I get toothache but I can remember having sore gums before I knew what it was. This was 2 years ago now. I’m on amitypline which helps but the pain can still come bad when it has a flare up. It’s miserable

stuckinarutwithyou · 27/04/2021 18:03

I have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia which is constant pain rather than the shooting pain

HermionePotter123 · 27/04/2021 18:56

I have amitriptyline from the gp @Mummyof2dc but bit nervous to take it. How long were you taking it before you found it helped? Sorry to hear that you have atypical TN @stuckinarutwithyou. Do you mind me asking what your symptoms were before you got diagnosed and how you manage it?

Mummyof2dc · 27/04/2021 21:00

@HermionePotter123 tbh you will find it works straight away. With me I think I’m now used to them so much that it doesn’t work as good. Before I was having pain with my jaw every day but now I just only get flare ups. Especially if I’m stressed or tensed. So I would highly recommend if you are really suffering. Just remember to take them no later than 8 because they knock me out at night, some nights more than others.. and expect to feel really groggy and tired the next day but it will pass eventually as you get used to them. Everyone is different so who knows

Starrr123 · 01/05/2021 23:16
