Let the police dog retire with his handler....they have worked together for years, yes the dog is good at what he does and may have more years of work left him but their relationship is more important imo.

Hmm

Could you link to the article? As I haven't seen anything like that in the news.

Police dogs are incredibly expensive to train. We shouldn't just waste that money and skill on a dog-human relationship. Yes, dogs do bond with humans but they're also very capable of transferring their affections to another person who feeds them and works with them. The handler will have understood this when they started working with the dog.

Comes up quite often but police dogs are essentially very expensive equipment and in current times would mean a loss on a huge investment. Sounds callous I know and I love dogs and know a few dog handlers but that’s how it is seen

Catsick36 · 17/03/2021 21:31

The handlers know to expect the dogs to be moved on when they retire.

imyournextdoorneighbour · 17/03/2021 21:44

My exact comment to my DH! This is cruel to the dog and the handler!!

SquirmOfEels · 17/03/2021 21:46

Do you have a link?

I'm wondering why a Met Police dog is being reported on Points West (and I can't find a working link)

As police dogs, when they retire, usually stay with their handler, I was wondering if you could have misheard who was retiring

Bearnecessity · 18/03/2021 18:43

Sorry I am crap with links..

Sorry not Met...must be south-west regional police...

Handler all involved know the dog is a valuable tool they are not trying to stop what is happening...
It is still heartbreaking...chap has started Wags a charity for retired police dogs you may see it when googling that...

Sorry but he’s a young working dog and can see why he needs to keep working. It’s sad for his handler but if he’s been a handler for
20 years he knows how it is. His dog had another good few years left him in yet. Sounds harsh but this isn’t Disney

Bearnecessity · 18/03/2021 20:25

Disney..?

There is no respect for me, him or the dog there.
