How do you remember to do things?

I'm good at remembering things like dentist appointments etc by writing them in my planner & using my Google calendar. I'm very bad at remembering less important things - a tv program I'd like to watch but then miss because I've forgotten it was on, replying to a message from a friend because it arrives when I'm shopping & then it slips down my messages list until I notice 3 weeks later that its unanswered. I particularly have problems remembering things that occur to me when I'm driving and can't make a quite reminder note - the "must remember to add xyz to shopping list" etc thoughts which are forgotten as soon as I am negotiating a tricky island.

Tips & advice gratefully received.

For TV programmes, when I see a trailer for something I fancy watching, I put a reminder in my phone calendar for five minutes before it starts.
Can't help with the others though sorry!

I have a notepad and write it down then cross it out when it’s done. Old school but it works for me.
