I've just instant coffee in my bolognese. Life changing. Any other weird food hacks?

I've always done the regular MN bolognese with a stock cube, Worcestershire sauce etc etc with good results.

Saw some weirdo on here the other day who puts a teaspoon of instant coffee in hers.

Was feeling a bit maverick, tried it. Cannot wait to eat tonight.

I just thought you were going to say you mistook the jar of coffee for stock or gravy granules or something 🤔

Toilenstripes · 17/03/2021 15:51

I’ve heard of putting chocolate into chilli but I haven’t tried it yet.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2021 15:51

How can it be life changing if you've not actually eaten it yet?

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 17/03/2021 15:53

I put cocoa powder in chilli but haven’t tried coffee in bolognese!!

HamFisted · 17/03/2021 15:55

So... It's good?

GrumpySausage · 17/03/2021 15:55

Ooh might try that. I've heard of chocolate in chilli/spag bol for extra flavour but never coffee.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 17/03/2021 15:55

I’ve always thought instant coffee smells like gravy so that makes sense!

RunHobbitRun · 17/03/2021 15:56

We add balsamic vinegar to tinned tuna - it's perfection! (no idea if it's actually weird but my mother crinkled her nose when I told her)

catinbootsx · 17/03/2021 15:56

I've eaten about 10 ladles straight from the pan

I make good use of my Worcestershire sauce! Put that in lots of things. If that's not my secret ingredient usually it's Tabasco, soy sauce, mustard or paprika.

I've also learnt that most things benefit from a tiny little bit of salted butter. I put about 1/8 a spoon into my gravy and it takes it up a level.

catinbootsx · 17/03/2021 15:57

My mate told me that putting a bit of sugar in a curry completely changes it for the better - haven't tried that yet though

I have also put coffee in bolognese and chilli. I actually make a mocha mix these days, with a little bit of coffee and a little bit of cocoa.

catinbootsx · 17/03/2021 16:00

I've also recently switched from beef mince to turkey mince so don't know if that makes a difference

Dark chocolate in chili is delicious. Not sure about coffee in bolognese - I don't like coffee

catinbootsx · 17/03/2021 16:01

It really doesn't take like coffee

I've always been sceptical about the choc in chilli thing but will definitely try it now

Someone on here said to put marmite in it. It was horrible.

Roszie · 17/03/2021 16:09

We really didn't like it.

Wasted a whole pot!

oldwhyno · 17/03/2021 16:10

I'm right into the traditional way with hardly any tomato and a combination of stock, wine and milk.

I must try this though.

catinbootsx · 17/03/2021 16:10

milk???

chocolate in chilli is horrid. might as well shit in it.

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 17/03/2021 16:44

Sweet chilli sauce in bolognese is brilliant too

Cailleach · 17/03/2021 17:07

Ginger in savoury dishes gives richness. And doesn't taste gingery for some reason...

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 17/03/2021 23:53

I put marmite in spag bol. We love it!
