Is £130 a month for gas and leccy obscene or normal?

Januaryblue2020 · 17/03/2021 10:00

Trying to get a handle on finances, and our gas and leccy bill is huge- 130 quid every month. We have a four bed house and are working from home at the moment. Does that sound reasonable or are we paying too much and/or consuming too much? Tia!

Ours is a small 4 bed (extended 3 bed) and we pay £70 a month. Probably needs to be a bit more now we are wfh. We haven't built up any credit over the summer and will be in debit after winter.

PilatesPeach · 17/03/2021 10:05

3 bed house here I pay £67 a month fix with Avro but I have been very frugal indeed this last year as not been earning due to lockdown - tend to put an extra layer on or sit on sofa under a blanket if chilly - will put heating on if really cold outside but not routinely - hot water on for a couple of hours twice a day. Currently about £70 in credit after doing a meter reading today.

SuperPixie247 · 17/03/2021 10:08

I have a 3 bed but meters for both gas and electric. I spend around £50 a month on both in a bad month. In the summer it's maybe half that as the house is naturally warm.

Obviously I'm not expecting you to rush out and get a meter but maybe something to think about.

I should say I work from home and have the house around 23 degrees most of the time. I like to be warm Blush

tootiredtospeak · 17/03/2021 10:10

Mine is that 122 a month 4 bed semi EON is always around that figure and never get behind or much in front.

pumpkinpie01 · 17/03/2021 10:10

We pay £104 a month it was £145 until I changed suppliers. I get a bill every month so I have been keeping a very close eye on it. Januarys bill was £198 and February's was £166. In the summer months it was between £65-£90.

SheilaTheThief · 17/03/2021 10:10

Mine is £90 a month for 3 bed semi, 4 of us living here with 2 kids included in that.

Akire · 17/03/2021 10:11

1 bed flat gas about £8 elec £15 a week so
That’s £92 a month and I hardly ever have the heating on. Sounds about right to me.

skeggycaggy · 17/03/2021 10:12

I pay that for my big Victorian semi.

Desmondo2021 · 17/03/2021 10:13

Large 4 bed house and not particularly careful about energy usage, heating on a lot etc, £135 a month

wejammin · 17/03/2021 10:13

We've got a 4 bed semi and our bills are currently £148 p/m direct debit, and we're £187 in debit. There's 5 of us and over winter that was 2 adults working from home and 2 school aged kids homeschooling so our electricity in particular went through the roof, but also it was freezing so the heating was on a lot. Last winter our bills were about £100 a month, for comparison.

thirstyformore · 17/03/2021 10:13

We pay £155 a month. 4 bed semi, two adults working from home, 2 kids. Sounds like we pay a lot compared to others? But we aren't frugal at all....dryer on twice a day etc

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 17/03/2021 10:13

Mine is around that much. It reduces during the summer (I'm not on fixed DD), we're in a 3 bed ground floor flat and there's up to 5 of us in it most of the time. We are not great at conserving energy, switching off at plugs etc. I did that once religiously for a while, making sure everything was off and nothing was on standby. Saved at least a quid a day. Didn't keep it up though cos it was a hassle.

dementedpixie · 17/03/2021 10:16

Sounds reasonable to me. I submitted readings yesterday and had used £78 electric and £52 gas last month. I pay £130 per month just now. Usage will decrease as the weather gets warmer.

P.s. 4 bed detached in Scotland with 2 adults and 2 teens

notacooldad · 17/03/2021 10:17

3 bed semi.
4 of us living here.
2 working from home.

Use tumble when necessary.
Dishwasher on once a day
Washin machine ince every other day.
Not tight with heating.
Pay £62 a month.
We haven't underpId, the amount us accurate. We are with Shell energy.
Our previous company was with British Gas and was paying £94 a month and got a decent refund.

InglouriousBasterd · 17/03/2021 10:17

Tiny 2 bed flat about £100 a month. My brother in his 5 bed pays the same and was horrified!

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2021 10:20

We pay double that, four bed, but it’s an old listed building and a bastard to heat.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/03/2021 10:32

Well the average is around £1200 per year, and you're a bit above that, but that would be expected, seeing as you have an above averaged sized house.

But there's lots of other variables, so you might want to have a look through Moneysavingexpert if you're wanting to look into your gas and electric costs, and all other aspects of your finance in forensic detail:

LIZS · 17/03/2021 10:33

Ours is similar

onemouseplace · 17/03/2021 10:35

Ours is £120 a month for 5 of us in a draughty 3 bed. It definitely went up with us all at home the majority of the time plus homeschooling, dishwasher on twice a day etc etc plus we had a colder snap this winter.

Caspianberg · 17/03/2021 10:35

Sounds ok. We paid around £300 in oil in winter months, and £140 electric year around. 6 bed.

vickibee · 17/03/2021 10:36

We pay £100 pcm for our old draughty 4 bed but no idea whether we are in credit ot what
We have dumb smart meters - I am clueless how to read them. It displays so many different numbers that only stay lit for about two seconds. It is a worry I have contacted our supplier but they dont seem bothered

PattyPan · 17/03/2021 10:39

I think that’s high. There’s 2 of us in a 2 bedroom house working from home and we pay £47 a month.

lalaloopyhead · 17/03/2021 10:39

We live in a (cold) 3 bed end terrace, we pay £140pm at the moment...and its still never warm.....
Our usage went up a lot over the period both me and DH were working from home - when I put my metre readings they were so high I was asked to check they were correct!
We have never been under £100 with this house, unfortunately.

3babylady · 17/03/2021 10:40

I was paying £150 for both to Eon in a 2 bed house for 3 years, I moved to a 3 bed house with more places to lose heat including a conservatory and spend around £120 a month with British Gas, It's worth checking your meters and giving accurate meter readings every month as 'estimated bills' were just shockingly inaccurate quite often.
I now have smart meters so I can track peak times.
