Is £130 a month for gas and leccy obscene or normal?

Trying to get a handle on finances, and our gas and leccy bill is huge- 130 quid every month. We have a four bed house and are working from home at the moment. Does that sound reasonable or are we paying too much and/or consuming too much? Tia!

@Outbutnotoutout

I have a 2 bed house, mid terraced.

I pay £230 per month for the following

Gas
Elec
Broadband
House/building insurance
2 mobile phones

With Utility Warehouse

It’s cheaper to pay for insurance upfront if you can as they charge you an instalment fee otherwise. I am also in a 2 bedroom mid terrace and pay less than £100 a month for all that using different providers (dividing my insurance by 12). My insurance was actually £119 for the year so shopping around could really save you some money (I’m guessing the bundle means you don’t have specialist insurance).

4 bed old house, I pay 112 a month so I don't think it's that unusual.

Trinacham · 18/03/2021 17:46

£58 here but we do work away from home full time and in a 3 bed mid-terrace

Not just single ladies! Married woman who does the comparison quotes and looks after the finances- shock horror!! How does my husband let me do that!!

ButtonMoony · 18/03/2021 17:52

Ha ha.

Try 300 a month plus just for gas and electric.

Yours sounds cheap to me but I clearly live in a parallel universe to most of you.

Plus another 60 for broadband and 90 for SKY

I'm with Eon. 3 bed terraced house with an old gas back boiler. About £130 per month, but I have babies and so much washing so have the heating on a lot. Will massively cut back as soon as weather turns.

PattyPan · 18/03/2021 18:18

@ButtonMoony do you live in an uninsulated mansion in the middle of nowhere? You are definitely overpaying for broadband

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 18/03/2021 18:24

£117 combined with Avro. I'm with Flipper so pretty confident I've got the best deal.

Four bed semi with heating on most of the day as elderly father lives here too. (Other rads turned down or off) and large proportion of flat roof which leaks heat!

I live on an island. An island with no choice for gas, no choice for electric, and lretty much no choice for broadband. It sucks seeing how little you lot pay.

We even get your adverts on TV telling us how much it would be to live less than 100 miles away Confused

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 18/03/2021 18:40

I have 3 bed terrace and its about £35 gas in winter its a well insulated house , £20 summer but our electric is about £95 a month , so sounds similar to mine
I use my tumble dryer etc whenever I want though

PattyPan · 18/03/2021 18:44

@ButtonMoony ah that sucks, at least you can get all the sky channels I guess!

windisblowing · 18/03/2021 19:32

it is about what we pay for small 4 bed semi

yearinyearout · 18/03/2021 19:37

Ours has been 128 a month, four bed house with all wfh over winter...it's going up in may to 160 because of us owing some. Think I'll shop around!

gurglebelly · 18/03/2021 20:05

Mine is 125 a month for a 3 bed semi

Prioritiess · 18/03/2021 20:07

Sorry to hijack- who do you get to check meters ? That there isn’t an issue causing them to charge too much ? Is there some kind of independent specialist or just a regular electrician ?

Look at Flipper. They check the market and move you when they find a better tariff. They do everything. I just sent meter readings online.

I just got my annual statement.
It's £30 per year.
They checked the market 14 times.
They flipped me three times.
I saved £718

canigooutyet · 19/03/2021 09:17

There is. Iirc you start with your utility company. If no joy you can go to the ombudsman - OFGEM.

Your provider should have all these details on their site. Cab can also be useful.

This assumes you are in England

karala · 19/03/2021 09:27

I pay that for a 4bed semi - 100 years old with some windows not double glazed. WFH

Pyewackect · 19/03/2021 09:31

Ours is £200+ but we do have quite a big, Victorian house. I've tried everything to try and get it down, like not using the conservatory , lagging the loft and having the shash windows re-done ( which is insanely expensive ) but it doesn't make any difference. I can only assume the Victorians were a lot more hardy and used to drafts and cold, altho they did have servants laying and lighting fires in each room - still have the original servants bells too. Very Upstairs Downstairs.

Monkeybunkey · 19/03/2021 09:36

Normal for me in the winter (4 bed semi, gas central heating, double glazing). I'm on a variable direct debit so pay for what I use each month. In the summer, my combined bill (gas and electricity) is around £40. If you're paying £130 every month, that seems high to me.

EggcellentTaste · 19/03/2021 09:37

4 bed, detached, modern house (so good insulation) but a love of tech so a few TV, laptops etc. WFH. Plus a tendancy to cook so gas hob/oven often on for a hour or more a day.

£140 per month for both.

moostermum · 19/03/2021 17:00

OMG ours is £210 for 4 bed house. I don't use dryer much as have spare room to dry everything. We have a hot tub but only for 6 months a year. Use octopus energy and shopped around. Meters read correctly and have smart meter. North of England
