Is £130 a month for gas and leccy obscene or normal?

Januaryblue2020 · 17/03/2021 10:00

Trying to get a handle on finances, and our gas and leccy bill is huge- 130 quid every month. We have a four bed house and are working from home at the moment. Does that sound reasonable or are we paying too much and/or consuming too much? Tia!

Sounds ok to me, ours work out to around £140 for a large 3 bed semi.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/03/2021 15:12

Mine is £105 for a 2 bed semi but I do not scrimp on heating, I have it on whenever I want. My boiler is old though.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 17/03/2021 15:30

Two bed terrace - we pay around £60 a month. I work part-time so the heating is generally on from about midday in winter, plus for about 30 minutes each morning.

Just two adults (and four animals) at home.

Ours is £130 a month, 3 bed victorian terrace and I like to be warm. Three of us living here, two working from home at the moment, the other one has only just gone back to school.

I have a four bed house and someone is in the house at all times. £58/month here for both gas and electricity and I do put the heating on whenever I feel cold, I don't stint.

Bagelsandbrie · 17/03/2021 15:36

We have a 3 bed semi, heating on for about 5 hours a day, tumble dryer and washing going non stop - family of 4- we pay £50 gas and £65 electric.

FlyingBurrito · 17/03/2021 15:40

@dementedpixie

Why does your dh have to look at changing supplier? Could you not have researched a better tariff?
Thankfully not necessary to have a penis to use a comparison site or us single ladies would be stuck with uncompetative tariffs for everything Grin
dementedpixie · 17/03/2021 15:41

It's me who sorts out the gas and electric supplier. Dh probably doesn't have a clue who we're with Grin

PickAChew · 17/03/2021 15:43

Sounds bloody cheap!

joystir59 · 17/03/2021 15:43

But, although house built 1810 it's very well insulated, we don't have a dish washer or tumble dryer, and there is only me and an elderly relative who doesn't use much of anything but I do have to have the heating on more for her benefit. Having said that even in the heart of winter the heating isn't on all the time, because the house heats up quickly and stays warm once it's warm.

Ggeemerc · 17/03/2021 22:01

In our old house, small detached, we paid 150 pcm. Now we live in a small 3 bed semi and it's 80 pcm. Seems to vary massively. Similar sized homes.

fitflopqueen · 18/03/2021 06:55

dementedpixie, I have raised this previously that we could change but this specific bill is not in my name. I swop regularly for phone, insurance etc

ancientgran · 18/03/2021 16:17

@Januaryblue2020 I just want to say thank you. My husband is a bit stubborn, understatement, but today I insisted we look at getting a cheaper supplier and now we are just paying 50% more than you instead of double. We use alot of gas/electric some due to his disability but I'm saving £70 a month so thank you for the inspiration.

Etulosba · 18/03/2021 16:22

Pre covid £130 or thereabouts was normal for us. Now it's £180+

Onedropbeat · 18/03/2021 16:22

I don’t think it’s that high
Ours is around £110-120 a month in an old 2 bed end of terrace

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 18/03/2021 16:27

We pay £114 a month for both, just me, hubby and the dog...3 bed detached...

BigBeachWales · 18/03/2021 16:31

£169 a month direct debit..: 6 bed old Victorian house near Cardiff... and it's still freezing!!!

Purplewithred · 18/03/2021 16:34

I think it's on the high end of normal.

We are 4 bed '90s mid terrace, 3 adults, 2 working from home full time and the other one working out of home but often night shifts. We like the house warm so given someone is home pretty much full time at the moment the heating is on all day.

PattyPan · 18/03/2021 16:35

Some of you must be on seriously uncompetitive tariffs to be paying so much - get yourselves to the moneysaving expert website!

BigPyjamas · 18/03/2021 16:36

We pay £150m just for electricity.

Old Victorian house but I can't fathom how we are using so much.

On an economy 7 meter which we inherited. Nightmare

Akire · 18/03/2021 16:43

30% of all my bills are standing charges plus the less you use the more per Khwatt until you use a certain level. The it drops down from say 28p or 18p each unit. I never buy any at the cheaper rate because I don’t use enough. Strange system.

BramblyHedge · 18/03/2021 16:51

4bed semi with single skin walls. 5 occupants all at home until schools went back. £145.

Outbutnotoutout · 18/03/2021 17:00

I have a 2 bed house, mid terraced.

I pay £230 per month for the following

Gas
Elec
Broadband
House/building insurance
2 mobile phones

With Utility Warehouse

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 18/03/2021 17:07

We pay £100 electricity and £50 gas (we are on lpg) for our 4 bed so it sounds reasonable to me

Mummaofboys93 · 18/03/2021 17:12

2 bed flat, 3 of us living here & we spend about £80 a month.
