Weird smell in house... should I worry?

Suddenly got a weird smell, I can’t describe it... not like food, more almost chemical? It’s harsh, like you can taste it at the back of your throat. I’ve not been in the rooms where you can smell it this evening. I’ve not cleaned today or bought anything new. Please tell me I’m worrying over nothing?

What rooms is it in

WhatIsThisSmell · 15/03/2021 23:31

Bedrooms so no big appliances just phones charging or radios, that kind of thing in terms of electrics.

Not an over heating cable?
DH socks? Haha..
I'm out of ideas.

Iflyaway · 15/03/2021 23:36

Many variables here. How old is the house?

If it's a chemical smell, give the council a ring I would say.
Any factories in the area? Etc.

Have you checked with the neighbours if they have it too?

tupperwaretowers · 15/03/2021 23:37

I’d check your electrical sockets for overheating, that can give off a smell, sometimes a bit fishy.

ThriceAsNaice · 15/03/2021 23:38

Can anyone else smell it? I ask because my first Covid symptom was a horrible chemical smell, as if I'd been using bleach and it had got up my nose, it was as if I was breathing it it.

WhatIsThisSmell · 15/03/2021 23:40

Only about 20 years old I think. I’ll check the cables. I’ve opened the windows as it’s giving me a headache. It’s only come on this evening so it’s too late to ask the neighbours.

Yes my charger smelt fishy. I remember saying to dh. He said I was mad. I then went to plug phone in and it burnt my hand. I darent think what would of happened if we'd gone to sleep

WhatIsThisSmell · 15/03/2021 23:50

Thrice DH can too and it’s fine in some rooms and not in others so it doesn’t sound like that. I hope you’re ok now.

Is it worse around light fixtures? We had an IKEA lampshade that smelled odd when the heat from the bulb warmed it up, reminded my of Copydex. Have heard similar about some light fittings.

Molehillfromamountain · 15/03/2021 23:55

We had a weird plasticky smell in DDs room once, when I turned on the light to investigate the bulb blew and looked slightly scorched.
Could it be something like this OP?

MX08 · 15/03/2021 23:55

Surely a strange smell would make you consider a covid test. It’s not always loss of smell from what I’ve heard, can be changes to smell as well that’s a symptom?

On the other hand, I have sinus trouble and regularly get massive weird issues with my sense of smell, are your sinuses ok?

Reinventinganna · 15/03/2021 23:57

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm?

PlanetPuddle · 15/03/2021 23:58

Get a covid test just to be on safe side

PlanetPuddle · 15/03/2021 23:58

Do you have gas boiler/oven?

PJ04JCW · 16/03/2021 00:15

Could you be pregnant? Quite usual to be more sensitive to smells.

DishingOutDone · 16/03/2021 00:23

Party wall issue I bet - I'm in a semi, these houses were built with no proper firewalls. I can smell if someone next door has a fag in bed, and a lost hamster simply walks from one house to the next via the floorboards. Do you suspect next door have varnished a floor or used chemicals for something?

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 16/03/2021 01:09

When that happened to me, I lived in a semi detached house and the neighbours were smoking weed.

blueshoes · 16/03/2021 01:11

Dead rat under floorboards type of smell?

tupperwaretowers · 17/03/2021 21:28

Did you get to the bottom of it?

deste · 17/03/2021 22:03

Have a look at the ceiling light fitting. They can give off a horrible smell when they overheat.

Justvisitingthisplanet · 17/03/2021 22:30

I had chemical smell in my flat, realised they were decorating downstairs so gloss and varnish smells were travelling through
