I'm moving this weekend. Collecting keys on Saturday.
What will I forget to do?

I've just booked the man with a van and the boxes have arrived v. Now to start packing!

I did up a standard letter on my pc, and changed the address and ref number for each utility, insurances (car, travel, life etc), bank account etc. Meant I could easily keep copy of each.

Separate letter to house insurance as you're cancelling 1 and starting a new one.

BOx with full roll kitchen towel, spray cleaner, bleach, wash up liquid, pot scourer, tea, coffee, sugar (even if you don't use it, some helpers may), plenty biscuits, mugs, glasses (for water), a pot or kettle, couple of screwdrivers, bin nags, etc. Goes with the first person into new house. (You may want similar as last box out of old).

Label the boxes as you pack - at least destination room but preferably a word indicating contents too

Great suggestions on here OP. We have recently moved, I totally agree with BiddyPop, label boxes with room and description of contents otherwise you end up with 15 boxes in the kitchen and haven’t a clue what’s in each one.

Good luck with your move, wishing you much happiness in your new home Flowers

When we helped our elderly neighbour move we did a floorplan of new house for her (to help her know how much furniture to get rid of in advance) and then on the day we put post-its up in the new house on the walls saying where each bit of furniture should be put by the movers. Worked a treat.

Make sure you label boxes with the rooms in the new house not the old. So eg if books were downstairs but now going to be upstairs make sure they say bedroom 1 not dining room.

Thanks all. I'm busily writing on boxes

Quick question how much should I tip the man with a van?

£10? Enough to buy some
Beers or a takeaway.

My cat always goes in kennels if I move so I have to make sure she's there before I do the real heavy clearing as it distresses her.
I book her in for a long spell on the understanding that I can take her in & collect her any day during that time in case of delayed moves, etc.

Cancel milk delivery.

Leave all the keys for the new owner along with appliance handbooks for any inbuilt appliances or those you are leaving.

You can take light shades but you have to leave a bulb. If you take a whole light fitting, you have to replace it with a wire and bulb.

We kept the ones we took down in our new build house, so if we move and take the light fittings we will just put back the wire and bulb we have saved.

If you have time and if you have lovely plants in the garden, draw a rough map of the garden and puts the names/types of trees and shrubs so the new owner knows what is in the garden.

Just been out and bought new light bulbs as we're taking ours as they are smart.
