I've just started watching I Think We're Alone Now and this is the premise. I'm only 8 minutes in and we've just seen how our hero spends his time.

I think it's a fascinating idea so I had to pause it to consider what I would do. What would you do?

Those going for sperm, are you ready to birth alone? I'm too old and a coward, so the species is doomed.

I would practice driving, since nobody else on the roads so safer. Once I've remembered how, I'd go get perishable food and have a wee feast. Then i would stock up with a week's supplies, and drive to higher ground, with a tower I could look out just in case. I'd take some good books and hope I could binge watch movies somehow. Lots to drink and eat, cosy and comfy.

After a week i would take all the pills I could find, drink some lovely bubbly and play nice music to see myself out.

Doesn't sound too bad really. But note there are no rats, dead bodies or zombies in my version 😍

ilovebagpuss · 14/03/2021 17:15

I think I would say alive for a while anyway. Load up a decent size van with food and clothes and stuff. Siphon off petrol as I go from other cars. Head somewhere like Cornwall small fishing village where I could take a boat for some fishing.
Find somewhere I could stable a couple of horses and have some chickens and goats. Grow Veg and fruit and stock up on horse feed etc, raiding all the garden centres for seeds and so on.
Just live simply use candles and so on go back to Anne of Green Gables lifestyle.
Read All the Books Drink all the Booze then top myself if I get too lonely.

@Graffitiqueen

Find a sperm bank and try and continue the species.
I'm astounded anyone would do this. Many reasons:
  1. You're not continuing the species as you need at least 50 people for a breeding group. What you'd have is inbred incest.
  1. Maternity care? 1 in 3 dies in childbirth without it.
  1. Leaving children alone if you die early, which you probably will.
  1. All the dreadful childhood things that could happen without medicine, dentistry etc. Appendicitis would have killed me at 11. Wisdom teeth, all the other stuff? Life was nasty, brutish and short before we had modern things.
Laggartha · 14/03/2021 17:19

On reflection it's all a bit Threads and shit, isn't it?

No health care, no fresh food and just a lifetime of subsistence farming.

I’d spend some time doing daily sortees from my house (central london) scavenging. I’d find a house close by with open fires (assume all utilities are shot to f). I’d prioritise long life food scavenging and trucks. I’d go to closest Royal Mail sorting office where there is a half acre of vans and fuel supply. I’d break in and somehow work out how to access vans (need now to find out how to Hotwire).
I’d want to travel south in the long term for climate. Need to work out how to get supplies/truck and spares through channel tunnel.
Ok will prioritise light travel and then once in northern France will do my stockpiling/truck stuff.

@JazzyJelly

Free all the animals in cages so they have a chance.
@JazzyJelly a chance to eat you? Grin
HeronLanyon · 14/03/2021 17:24

Listened to day of the triffids audiobook recently - what a great ‘read’. Not dissimilar.

Bunnybigears · 14/03/2021 17:25

Initially I would be thinking of all the fun things I could do but I think reality would quickly set it. Presumably eventually the electricity wouldn't work anymore, the food in the shops would run out/go off so I would be left trying to fend for myself, how would I get petrol for the car? How would I feed all the animals? What would I do if I got poorly? I think then I would find that all the things I thought would be fun I.e having the local swimming pool all to myself actually aren't that much fun on your own.

Franksalot · 14/03/2021 17:25

I'd move into Selfridges or Harrods. Eat all the food in the Food Hall, wear all the clothes, and sleep in the beds in the furniture department.

Morgan12 · 14/03/2021 17:28

Has everyone else died? And I know this for sure? If so then I'd kill myself.

If everyone has disappeared then I would try and solve the mystery and wait it out to see if anyone came back. I'd go look for weapons first.

Yes have considered all those things. I would still do it.

Bvop · 14/03/2021 17:30

Loot the bookshop. Then loot the bakery and sit down with a coffee, a slice of cake and a book and read uninterrupted all day.

Then I’d deal with more practical things.

Morgan12 · 14/03/2021 17:32

I'd also get lots of morphine.

sittingonacornflake · 14/03/2021 17:36

Honestly? Wander around in shock. Go to my parents house and wail probably. Then mostly feel hopeless and cry.

MorePotatoSalad · 14/03/2021 17:36

I'd have to teach myself to drive. That would be fun 😂

Chewingle · 14/03/2021 17:38

If I knew for sure I was the only one
I’d kill myself. My life without my children not worth living.
If there was even the remotest chance one of my children were still alive, then not stop looking until I found them or died of some other cause

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 14/03/2021 17:42

(The film was a bit rubbish btw).

Aww really it sounded like my kind of thing

mummywithhermini · 14/03/2021 17:57

I would take over somebody's huge mansion as my new home.

WhiskyWhiskersdottir · 14/03/2021 17:58

Feed the cat

picknmix1984 · 14/03/2021 17:58

Unfortunately I think I am the type of person who would want to live until the bitter end. Then find the end very bitter indeed.
Without any person to talk to, I think I would get depression pretty quick initially. Whether I could find things to keep me going so I didnt, or get myself out of it, is debatable.

Significantown · 14/03/2021 18:09

Scream. No point in living without dd.

We had to do this as part of cold war joy maybe teacher had just read Zachariah at primary school.

Choice4567 · 14/03/2021 18:14

Yeah as soon as I read the title I thought ‘Jill myself’. Not much point being alive if everyone else is gone

Choice4567 · 14/03/2021 18:14

‘Jill myself’?!! 😳😳😳
