Fuck - boiler making weird noises

At least I assume it’s the boiler . Sudden very loud noise from upstairs - like a vibrating noise . Only appliances upstairs is the shower, and boiler/hot water tank .

Got out, phoned gas emergencies and they said if no smell of gas, go back in and turn off the boiler, said should be safe to sit in the house .

Phoned council, someone will be out tonight to check boiler .

I can’t calm down . Sitting watching TV and panicking .

I’ve turned the boiler off, but council and gas people said categorically not to try and turn the gas off at the valve as I’ve no idea how to do it .

Have I done the right things? Felt a bit daft going outside like that but wasn’t sure what was best - it was a very sudden loud noise like a motorbike going past .

Is it the definitely the boiler or could it be the radiators making the noise? They may need bleeding.

How cold is it where you are? When our outlet pipe from our boiler froze the boiler made horrible vibrating noises. Defrosting the pipe allowing the water to flow freely stopped the noise.

You've absolutely done the right things. It could be something as simple as the casing coming loose and vibrating, that can be noisy. Or, like ours did it might need a new fan - that was quite noisy too when it was wearing out.
Boilers these days are very safe and will cut out and stop working if there's a fault (and mine is over 20 years old!)

Was it a one off noise or continuous?
My boiler sometimes makes a noise when it fires up

BornOnTwelthNight · 13/03/2021 19:58

Our boiler makes an awful racket when it’s firing up, also get a buzzing from the water tank cupboard which vibrates through the walls now and again, it’s just a bit rickety!

Hopefully yours is nothing serious and as already mentioned, if there was a serious fault it would probably cut out.

We had similar , started about 11pm when I used the bathroo tap.
A loud , whine noise .
It would fade , then come back.

We called a Plumber it wasn't anything inside , it was under the man-hole cover in the street ( gong to our house)

Annoyingly , even though the problem had been identified and no-one from the waterboard would have to come into our house it wasn't sorted for at least 3 weeks .
Not an Emergency , they said .
Even though it affected us ( DH WFH , I was out , DC studying at home ) the NDNs could hear it .
All bloody day All bloody night Hmm

Check the pressure - ours was doing this when the pressure was so high

Helpmecalmdown · 13/03/2021 22:09

It was the pressure - engineer has fixed it. Said if it was a serious problem the boiler would have shut down which is reassuring - I get the feeling he thought I’d over reacted slightly (it’s been a day of that) but it did genuinely sound concerning - you could hear it from the street ! Anyway . Shattered now and house still hasn’t warmed up right so off to bed I think . Thanks 😊

Does it sound like a jet/helicopter?
Our combi did. It was gunk in the system and needed flushing out with a special solution.
