I might go to Waitrose tomorrow and I feel like I'm going on holiday

This is a major excursion Grin

Anything you'd particularly recommend?

Have you got a cat? Whenever I go to Waitrose I treat dcat to a packet of Lick-e-lix. I’m a bit worried she’s getting addicted though!

DahliaMacNamara · 13/03/2021 23:43

It's a good 30 miles to a decent-sized Waitrose from here, so not a lockdown treat. Even the smaller branch is too far away to be decent, and it's just frustrating to find they don't carry the lines you want. I'm pining for their bath soaps and coleslaw myself. Oh, and their sour fruit pastilles. How do I manage to buy £70 worth of fuck all every time I go in? So good, though.

Ariela · 13/03/2021 23:51

I live in Waitrose Land, just a few miles from their HO so am surrounded by a choice of about 10 stores in a 10 mile radius. I do go to my local one every week but every now and then I pick a different one as they all are slightly different.
I will second the own brand baked beans, far superior to Heinz.
Their own brand butter is far better than Anchor
We love their smoked haddock fishcakes
I adore their raspberry and pistachio No 1 Ice Cream, ditto their coffee one, and coconut & lime sorbet. Probably won't have all 3 in stock same day but it's good to rotate.

QueenPaw · 13/03/2021 23:52

I went to b&m AND there was a giant argument, security got involved AND I was in the queue for ages so got to hear all of it < happy sigh >
It was a great day out Grin (shielding and needed washing up liquid, had first vaccine a month ago and decided to brave a trip out)

WellTidy · 14/03/2021 06:29

Own brand Lemon and pepper breadcrumbs - they’re with the dry spices. I use them for fish cakes and they really transform them

All of the own brand granolas are lovely - I buy the almond and raisin one

Frozen chopped shallots

Essentials ketchup way cheaper and nicer than Heinz

Bloodybridget · 14/03/2021 06:39

Oh god, this is making me think I might plan a Waitrose trip once I've had second vaccine. Not our nearest though, because that's in a rather depressing location, I want one in a naice area . .

DearlyIgnored · 14/03/2021 06:59

I’m up, my lateral flow test was negative and I’m excited Grin

New York vanilla cheesecake- the best out of any supermarket with some fresh berries yum !

Plus a bunch of flowers

Ilovechoc12 · 14/03/2021 07:03

Smoked salmon too - thinly sliced and fresh lemon

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 14/03/2021 07:07

Oh, I really miss the days of leisurely shopping in Waitrose!

Don't forget to come back with some flowers/a plant in a nice pot!

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 14/03/2021 07:16

Oooh, I was planning to go to Tesco at 10am today but now I think I might go to Waitrose instead...

My fave thing: essential seafood sticks. They are so much tastier than any other shop's version. They make a really good sandwich/jacket potato filler or salad, chopped up and mixed through some mayo or seafood sauce, along with their essential prawns.

OMG now I'm starving!

peak2021 · 14/03/2021 07:21

Look at the cheese counter, often something unexpected.

AlwaysLatte · 14/03/2021 07:22

I always stock up on
Scented waste paper bin liners
Hot horseradish sauce
Lazy chopped ginger
Lemon and lime high juice squash
Chicken tenders for the kids
Sushi

Yesterday I got toffee hot cross bins which the boys didn't like but I did!

ChameleonClara · 14/03/2021 07:27

Tbh I used to quite look forward to the shopping before all this Blush

Yesterday I had to go to the health food shop, it was brilliant! We talked a lot about our day out at the living experience museum during tea.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 14/03/2021 07:44

Now that I’ve stocked up 😁 I’m happy to tell you that in the Cooks Ingredients section, you’ll find jars of Umami paste which just add ‘pizazz’ to absolutely anything savoury you may be cooking.

It’s fab.

I even give jars of it to my nearest and dearest.

LadySpratt · 14/03/2021 07:50

Where do I start? 😁

Waitrose 1;
Potatoes
Sourdough (any type)
Quartz cheddar, Manchego - almost any type
Greek yogurt, including fat-free (v smooth)
Custard
Meats
Raspberry and pistachio ice cream
Chocolate ice cream
Strawberry sorbet and white chocolate ice lollies
Vanilla ice cream
Parmesan
Prawn pizza (garlic, chilli and coriander)
Mushroom (with truffle oil) pizza
Coffee pods (Mexican one is lovely)
Milk chocolate - 49%

Normal Waitrose:
Fruit and veg - but prefer to knock out the pomegranate seeds myself as they seem to last a bit longer
Beetroot and mint hummus (and I don’t really like beetroot!)
Grilled artichokes
Olives - with jalapeño / mixed with feta
Their laundry range

Non-Waitrose:
Loch Fyne mussels
Denhay bacon - esp smoked streaky
Bonne Maman range is great
Unearthed - esp cooking chorizo
Seafood And Eat It crab - brown / white / 50:50
Mutti tomato products - esp the purée (could eat it from the tube!)
Charbonel and Walker hot chocolate
Manomasa tortilla chips
Crosta and Mollica range

Luckily for us, Waitrose is our closest supermarket. There’s not another supermarket than can touch it in terms of range and quality.

I love that lockdown has turned shopping into a treat. Have a nice time OP!

TroysMammy · 14/03/2021 07:52

I feel your excitement. When we visit my DP's family we always call into Waitrose in their town. I was thrilled the other day to see a Waitrose van pass my house. I run up the stairs to see who was having a Waitrose delivery on my street (council estate) but the van had gone around the corner. My nearest Waitrose is about 30 odd miles away. Enjoy your shopping trip Envy.

Peridot1 · 14/03/2021 08:16

OP you are being totally unreasonable! Even if this isn’t in AIBU. Wink

I now have a very long shopping list! We moved a few months ago and are now near a Waitrose and I was there in Friday. Always buy more than II went in for. And now I have added most of the recommendations from here to my list for next time. Ours isn’t a huge one but there apparently is a much bigger and better one about 20 mins away.

For New Year we had their No 1 Dry Aged Bone in Sirloin of Beef with Waitrose beef gravy with the juices from the beef added in. It was fab. Really really good. Just been looking at their Easter roasts and it all looks good!

Enjoy your trip! Looking forward to reading what you end up buying.

R00tat00tt00t · 14/03/2021 08:20

Ha ha! I did exactly this yesterday. Enormous queue to get in (at least 20 mins). Spent ages going down every aisle picking up lots of things not on my list. DH actually called to see if i was okay when still not home 2 hours after left home!
I really like some of the things you can't get elsewhere e.g. rose veal, itsu products, interesting spices/ingredients, good ownbrand frozen veggies inc sweet potato fries, potato Rosti, Waitrose essential chocolate eclairs, ALL the cheese, faith in nature and balance me toiletries etc. I picked up some goodies in the reduced section for Saturday night tea - ready to cook pork schnitzel, fresh berries for pud.
Also got a lovely ceramic pot with pink ranunculus bulbs in, some gift cards and cook book and walked out almost £200 down!
Would have been a thoroughly enjoyable experience had it not been for the fact that certain Waitrose types seem to think the current rules don't apply to them. I'm thinking of the group of 4 yah yah late teen/early 20's daughters and Mum all shopping together and procrastinating over which dessert to buy and whether it needed to be vegan or not whilst blocking the entire dessert section from other customers with their moncler jackets and shopping baskets full of Tattinger...
Anyway, enjoy your lovely shopping trip.

dodiebantock · 14/03/2021 08:26

I treated myself to a 40 mile round trip to Exeter yesterday just to go to Waitrose for a special birthday present for my son. I too came out with a trolley of treat food. I felt a bit guilty as I live on my own and did not really neeeeeed extra lovely cheese and fruits - or the French Lavender spray... I did have a lovely cook free supper and my bathroom smells amazing.

How we have all changed this past year, making the most of ordinary things to make ourselves feel treated. Finding some joy in little things is perhaps a way of getting through this challenging time.

I bought my son a lovely bottle of French Brandy - £6 off too - bonus!

SimplyMarvellousDarrrrrrling · 14/03/2021 08:32

Their cake icing
Buy it and eat it like yogurt

NuclearDH · 14/03/2021 08:32

Get a jar of ndjura paste. I make my own goats cheese and nduja pizzas using Tesco sourdough pizza bases. But you could do it with a ciabatta. Best pizzas ever.

Artesia · 14/03/2021 08:42

The Indian ready meals are great, especially the makhani Dahl, veg biryani and the chicken shashlik.

Roystonv · 14/03/2021 08:47

I live rural Cumbria (yes we do have Booths!) and visiting a Waitrose (or a John Lewis) is such a treat. Can't afford to buy much so think of them as art galleries with lots of oohs and wows at the wonders.

MorePotatoSalad · 14/03/2021 09:00

Genuinely enjoying this thread!

Blue corn tortilla chips, I think they come under Gluten Free
Hemp milk, as a dairy alternative
Organic beef mince
Their frozen raspberries, really tasty
Waitrose own brand red rice and quinoa packets
Whole Earth Peanut Butter
Organic cornflakes
