Hi all,
I had a mirena coil fitted on Feb 19th ... I was due my period 2 days ago, I’m usually regular as clockwork. All I’ve had is some spotting .. I know it can affect periods but has anyone had any experience of it affecting the first period after it being fitted?
Thanks in advance xx

I stopped getting periods except for light spotting. Was a dream as I was getting severe flooding.

I’ve had 3 mirena coils now. First one in 2008 and haven’t had any periods since.

Yes, I had spotting on the first one, then no more periods at all.

Pressed post too soon - it can take between three and six months for the Mirena to settle down. For me it was well worth it.

Echo the above. I absolutely love mine. I actually just got my first ‘period’ in about 6 months and I’m 2 years in. It wasn’t a period just a bit of spotting after using the loo.
And to answer your question yes that was my experience also Obvs check your strings if you can and take a test if you’re nervous for any reason. I can’t remember what the guidance is about having unprotected sexual after insertion but if for any reason you think you are pregnant - check. Sometimes I do a cheap test after 4/5 months of no periods to check as my strings are short so I can’t always feel them but it’s always been negative obvs.

Unprotected sex* bloody autocorrect

When I had mine in I had no periods.

Since I have it taken it out, my periods are still erratic 18 months later. This is the second time I have had this situation post mirena removed. Just be aware for when and if you need it taking out.

Thank you everyone! I get nervous about the pregnancy issue but I think that’s normal! I will def be getting tests every now and then!
I’ve been having more headaches too .. I’m assuming that’s normal too?

I can’t find the strings on mine ... I asked my partner to try and he thinks he felt them .. so fingers crossed it’s all good!
Am I right in thinking that if it’s moved or attached to somewhere it shouldn’t I would have pains??

It buggers up your periods completely. I had almost constant light bleeding for months and then nothing at all. I could never find my strings either but wasn’t too bothered as I was using it for heavy periods rather than contraception.

DramaAlpaca · 13/03/2021 18:54

I could never feel my strings at all. When my GP eventually took it out she told me they'd been cut very short. I was also using mine for perimenopausal heavy periods, not for contraception.
