Alternatives to after school club

We've moved home and our primary school is over 3 miles away, great school but obviously not within walking distance.

DS1 is year 6 is September, he's in after school club currently but he's getting too old for it now, the deal in our old house was always that in year 6 he would start walking home on his own but then we moved.

I mostly work from home but school run takes 40 mins so it's too disruptive to my job to do at 3pm and then not have childcare for the final hour (I have a younger KS1 child too).

So I'm wondering if transport is the answer, we aren't entitled to free school transport as we chose the school (even though couldn't get closer anyway!) so do councils typically have a service where you can book and pay for transport for children? I've looked on our council's website but it doesn't say who is eligible or what it costs, so whilst I wait for a response I'm just wondering if others do similar?

I don't think they have that service. Maybe you could check out local taxi rates etc for a regular run?
