I am very worried

I will get straight to the point. I'm 46 and my periods are normally regulate within a couple of days. Always been very heavy for the first couple of days. This time I was a week and a half late and I have been on for 2 weeks. After the first week it started to dwindle and today I have gotten heavier. I went to the doctors a couple of days ago and told her I was concerned about it and asked if it could be the menopause. She said that there is a chance it could be and I have had bloods done today. The doctor said she wasn't concerned about the bleeding at this time. I am really tearful and spotty. I have a mental illness and I am prone to becoming anxious and Google things despite my doctors including my psychiatrist asking me not to. But obviously I am scared it's something serious and I am getting upset. I don't know what I'm asking really but I'm worrying!

You have done exactly the right thing in going to your doctor. There's nothing more you could have done, so try to stop Googling (I know how hard it is not to Google health things but try).

Your doctor has said she isn't concerned so that's a good sign. Your bloods should show whether you are starting menopause and if so your doctor will be able to talk through the options for managing your symptoms.

Erratic periods are a classic sign of menopause so there is far more chance it's that than anything else. Whatever the underlying cause, you have gone to the doctor the moment you noticed something unusual so if it does need any treatment this can be started straight away to nip the issue in the bud.

Can you make an appointment with your psychiatrist to talk through the anxiety you are feeling and how to manage this?

Thank you for the reply. I had a blood tests a month ago for most things and they all came back perfectly OK! I have a cpn so I'll talk to her about it when I see her next. I have always worried about my health excessively since both my parents died in 98 and 2007.

Menopause is by far the most likely reason, so try not to worry. Your doctor will be able to advise when your bloods come back.

Fibroids are also very common around the time of menopause. A pain to deal with but not anything to be overly concerned about.

Well it's not stopping, in fact it's getting far worse. I bought a moon cup and it's full and even overflowing. I lost 2 massive clots. I am awaiting a doctor call back and I am really scared.

Sorry to hear that OP, completely understandable that you are worried and I hope you get the call back soon. I don't want to dismiss your fears in the slightest but please try and focus on the blood tests that have come back OK, plus your consultation with the doctor who wasn't worried. Also, as a PP said, there could be a medical cause which is annoying but not something to be overly concerned about.

As I said, please don't take that as trying to shut down your worries, I mean it as reassurance.

My friend really struggled with similar bleeding and there’s nothing ominous in it aside from peri/menopause. I think some women are just more prone to this. I know she tried ablation but it didn’t help. The last I knew she was considering a hysterectomy to just make the bleeding stop.

fantasmasgoria1 · 16/03/2021 16:27

Tentative3 I haven't had my results through yet so hopefully in the next couple of days I'll have them. I am usually heavy for the first couple of days but never anything like this. And this is just over 2 weeks of bleeding! I worry a lot anyway! Thank you so much for your responses.

You meant the bloods from a month ago! Sorry I'm just panicking!

That's OK, panicking is understandable. It definitely sounds from what other posters have said that it could be menopause/peri menopause related.
