Magazine for 8 year old

Ds is 8 and currently gets Aquila magazine on subscription - this was a gift from DF. He likes it but has always read it in five minutes flat and it doesn’t seem to inspire great enthusiasm. Dd gets The Week Junior, and they fight over this and talk about the articles, and I see them both going back to it and re-reading it over several days, so it seems like better value.

Now the Aquila subscription is about to expire, and DF has asked if he should renew it or would ds prefer something else. Ds suggested the WWF magazine, because he likes ‘things about animals and explorers and the Amazon’ etc. He had seen it advertised, but when we looked into it it turns out it’s only published four times a year, so he changed his mind on that.

Can anyone recommend something similar that comes out more frequently? Or any magazine that your 8 year old really likes. Thanks!

I get Nat Geographic kids for my 7 year old and she loves it. Reads the whole thing and really enjoys the crossword.

The kids I look after get First News which is a weekly newspaper rather than a magazine, it's very good but maybe similar content to The Week.

My 7 year old likes the National Geographic Junior (and it often has some quite good 'free' gifts), Horrible Histories magazine and The Beano.

We get national geographic junior but tbh they flick through it rather than cover to cover
(Like I do with a magazine)

My DC enjoy the sciences based mag Whizz Pop Bang, we also got Nat Geo Kids for a while, but they didn't really read it as such.

Thanks for the suggestions. I wondered about National Geographic Kids. I’ve bought him that on odd occasions though, and he hasn’t been particularly enthusiastic.

Whizz Pop Bang looks great except that I don’t want demands to make slime and exploding potions in my kitchen!

The Week Junior do a monthly Science and Nature one.
Lego Explorer is good - it's stem based rather than character based and comes with a mini build each month connected with that issues theme.
The Phoenix Comic is good - stories and comic strips rather than facts.

Owl magazine

Is he into football? I expect this isn’t very mumsnet, but my 8 year old gets match of the day magazine and absolutely loves it, he does drive me mad with football trivia though.

How It Works is quite good.
