5 mg diazepam and driving

Would taking 5 mg diazepam make you unsafe to drive? Partner is arguing that he would be safe to drive after taking it. This is a theoretical discussion but I'm interested what people think

I strongly suspect his insurance company would think it made him unsafe to drive.

Too many variables to give a definitive answer.

I had the all clear from the dr and DVLA to drive when I was taking 20mg a day (2 x 10mg) for bad anxiety.

It all depends on how it makes you feel. I know people who would be knocked out on 20mg, 20mg calms my anxiety but does not make me feel any different.

I very much doubt that a grown man would be unsafe to drive after taking 5mg of diazepam but everyone's tolerances are different.

I had one by mistake once (it was supposed to be 2mg) and I was away with the fairies.
I only have diazepam occasionally though and I know you get used to it.

I believe Diazepam is now in the class of drugs that you shouldn't take, if you're going to drive.

I don't know what 5mg dosage translates to the 500microgram limit.

Personally I wouldn't drive after taking 5mg of diazepam. It wouldn't make me out of it, but it does make me feel I might not be as quick to react to something as I would be normally. I don't think there is a definitive rule to how much diazepam you can take and drive. But if you had an accident, it could become an issue.

Nellythemouse · 11/03/2021 23:55

I had 5mg before a medical procedure. It made me a bit spaced out and “meh, whatever” about what was going on around me - which was precisely the aim, but probably not how you should feel while driving a car. I’d been warned not to drive home after taking it and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable behind the wheel. Few hours later I was back to normal. So I certainly wouldn’t bank on being able to drive, but it probably depends on how you react to it. I’ve had 10mg once and it nearly knocked me out but clearly some people can take much more than that with fewer effects.

WetWeekends · 11/03/2021 23:59

My Mum would’ve crashed the car before she’d got out of the drive. My Aunt wouldn’t be able to even tell she’s taken it so would definitely be safe to drive. I think it’s probably only people who suffer severe anxiety who are not sedated enough to make driving dangerous though. I certainly wouldn’t let my DP drive after taking one.

Personally, I may as well have drunk several doubles on less than half that dose. I definitely wouldn't be driving.
