Crawling back to normality slightly slower than a tortoise taking the scenic route...

DS girlfriend and another couple have given up hope of a week in Finland kayaking over 1k of deserted rivers because they'll not be vaccinated they were supposed to go last summer 🙈

TrustTheGeneGenie · 23/03/2021 13:50

I can't carry on like this. We are never going to be free again are we? I just can't believe they will ever let this go.

Oh and fuck off with your reflecting bollocks. If I think too hard about the last year I'd probably strongly want to kill myself.

Worldgonecrazy · 23/03/2021 13:52

@SirSamuelVimes. At least part of his doom mongering today actually included doom mongering about the terrible long term effects of lockdown on people’s health and sanity.

@justasking111 I’m actually vaguely amused at all those who rushed to get vaccinated so they could go on holiday who now can’t.

There’s no point going for a vaccine now as holidays next year are moving out of my affordability range. We have a tiny mortgage and both earn well over average salary so heaven knows what it will be like for everyone else. I cannot justify spending £4K for a 2 week self catering holiday. Hopefully prices will return to a reasonable level in 2033 / 2024. I’m also hopeful that sanity will have returned by then and 2020/2021 will be removed from herd memory.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/03/2021 13:54

I'm finding that my sense of time is too broken to really feel like change is imminent. I know that restrictions are easing in the next few weeks that will affect my life, but I'm stuck in the now and anything else is other.

I found it hard to anticipate things in the autumn as it could all change at any moment.

DH is getting his vaccination at the weekend. 2 or 3 weeks after his elderly mother in Europe. No idea when we'll get to see her and the rest of the family. I wouldn't cope with flying until masks are ditched, so a cabin on a ferry is the best bet. Or loitering miserably in the sea air Grin
But for the time, effort and cost to go over, the roolz need to be sufficiently pleasurable. I'm fine with DH heading over solo anyway if that looks like a more practical option. He's done it at Christmas for a significant birthday before.

We holiday in the UK quite a lot, usually camping, but there's a limit to where we want to go, especially after the past year. Staycation sounds like absolute hell right now. It's just the daytripping we do to break the holiday up anyway as we're fortunate to be near a pleasant, touristy area. It's no break from the domestic drudgery of the past year. I like to go near the sea, want to be further south where it is milder and especially if things are not normal, have plenty of outdoor things to do.

Has the theoretical cost of foreign holidays gone up, have not checked??

Worldgonecrazy · 23/03/2021 14:02

I was just looking at booking October 2022. Prices are considerably increased. I also checked May 2022 and that was even more expensive. We paid £2.7k last year, now looking at £3.7k (October 2022) and £4.3k (May 2022)

We weren’t looking for anything fancy either, just a villa in Greece. I like my own space and kitchen on holiday.

NeedWineNow · 23/03/2021 14:11

I've decided I cannot cope with the news today. Whatever Dick Doom and the Fun Sponges say,, I do not want to pause, reflect or remember. I want to get on with life and yes, that includes going on holiday. We're booked for Greece at the end of August and have no intention of cancelling. One thing is for sure, if we can't go to Greece we won't be paying over and above to stay anywhere in this country. We'd sooner stay at home and have some days out.

Oh, now he doom mongers about the horrible effects of the lockdowns he advocated for?!

Having just held a sobbing DD1 who no longer believes that anything fun will be allowed to happen as a result of his and the other three's policies, he can get to fuck.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/03/2021 14:52

Have to admit I don't understand how they are voting "to make holidays illegal" on Thursday, when the actual review won't be complete until 12 April? Also isn't the vote just to extend the current powers as they're reviewed every 6 months?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 23/03/2021 14:58

Actually found this article. Surprisingly clear and non hysterical.

Yes but my understanding is the current powers are - do what we like because virus.

I'm so glad I don't do media, some of your posts are making me wince and I've not looked at anything today.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/03/2021 15:55

Forgive me ADs for I have reflected...

I dedicate my silence to the silent entertainment industry, offices and other workplaces. To the venues that are permanently silenced. To the silencing of democracy, protest and choice (if the government get their own way on certain issues) To the silent songs of worship. To the constant attempts at silencing and quashing of hope and optomism of normality and peoples' social spirit.

So much silence.

I have also reflected on the increased numbers of grey hairs in my fringe. I dedicate them to children's education.

Bog
I appreciate that

I particularly weep for London theatre, the background of my life since I was a child.

The sound of ballerinas arriving on stage in their blocked shoes.

The old posters for Art which referenced specific actors with new jokes for every cast change.

The spreading gasp of the audience in the Woman in Black when...actually, I can't say, it's a spoiler. I don't want to jinx any chance of it coming back.

ISaySteadyOn · 23/03/2021 16:43

@BogRollBOGOF, that made me cry.

@AcornAutumn, how about The Mousetrap? I was going to take DD1.

I'm sorry, ADs, I am so sad and angry. DD1 is too worried to go out and she seems to me to be quietly restricting her eating. She's not worried because of the virus but because of all the signs reminding us of the restrictions. Saw an article today saying the mental health of children between 5-16 has plummeted. No shit, Sherlock.

How's this for a slogan Can you look her in the eyes and tell her distress is worth less than your cowardice? In fairness, that idea originated from DH.

AcornAutumn · 23/03/2021 16:54

ISay you mean at the bus stop etc? I was worried what effect they would have on children.

How old is she? Is there any route she can take that would mean less exposure?

Re The Mousetrap, I had the worst seat in the house for that, aged 19 😂 I spent most of it squirming to see so I didn't appreciate it as much as I should probably.

I think I might do an 8pm candle for all the things we've lost.

ISaySteadyOn · 23/03/2021 16:59

She's 10. And I mean actually outside. Even though I have tried to protect her by taking her to parks with minimal signage.

I took DH to The Mousetrap for his birthday one year. He loved it though he didn't expect to Smile.

BogRollBOGOF · 23/03/2021 17:12

Fortunately I haven't seen too many signs when out. Other than the hands, blah, blah type. I'm pretty zoned out to a lot now.
A childhood doing everything with a book in one hand was good training for getting around with peripheral vision and not focusing on what I was doing.

DS1 is having to be prised off and shoved through the school doors most mornings at present. It was occasional for a certain point around the penultimate week of term previously.
At least DS2 seems to have settled back better and seems to be generally more of his naturally cheery self than he's been for a long time. He naturally has a sunny soul.

Your reflection is spot on Bog

I have got the rage over the amount of remember all the people that died of covid all over Facebook.

No every death matters. All the too late cancer diagnosis, the suicides, all the domestic abuse victims. Can't believe we are back to this way of thinking.
Feels like nothing has changed in a year, people are still so narrowly focused.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 23/03/2021 17:35

I loved The Mousetrap (I hadn't expected to, and was initially dragged along under sufferance!).

It's all rather quaint as is the theatre it's staged in, deliberately so I think but it's done with such charm and brio that the whole farcical jollity of it all carries the audience along. Great fun.

110APiccadilly · 23/03/2021 17:54

Excellent slogan ISay.

ISaySteadyOn · 23/03/2021 17:55

Ha! DH went to indulge me so like you, under sufferance. I pointed out to him that, unlike many plays of the 21st century, there was no message exactly. It was purely to entertain and it did.

I hope DD sees it someday.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 23/03/2021 18:04

It'll take more than a pandemic to kill off The Mousetrap. It would still run after a direct hit with a nuke...

TabbyStar · 23/03/2021 18:34

God the Today programme was tortuous tonight. There's no way I'm standing outside with a fucking candle later. Performative bollocks.

Thank you. I feel a bit better now Grin.

Let me guess

Children's charities have no comment on this?

I don't have children so there was a bit of me wondering if I was being over sensitive thinking the messaging would upset children.

I wish a friend would accompany me to the West End at night....the Woman In Black m
