Crawling back to normality slightly slower than a tortoise taking the scenic route...

I can give blood and I have, but it knocks me for six every time. I'm usually out of commission for the rest of that day and the day after. I don't know why.

But because I live here in the UK and have done for many years (17 in September), if I ever go back to the States (doubtful), I will not be allowed to give blood there because of CJD, I think.

It is, at least, a nice day today. And I have managed to remind myself again that even if I lose friends, I have already made quite a lot of lovely new ones ☺️

This is a good philosophy! Roll on our AD festival in the summer!

@TabbyStar

Oh and I've knackered my back and now can't walk very far. Old injury probably resurrected through being in the house most of the time and no swimming for four months, which kept it strong and flexible.
I've been creaking around. First because I lost my mojo for exercise over the winter, just too much disruption, lack of incentives, demands of family life, weather and mud. Now in the past couple of weeks I'm creaking because I'm trying to rebuild my habits and train for a race. My body and mind clearly disagree on the benefits of yoga!

I really feel for people missing out on swimming pools and gym equipment to keep going, who have limited options for keeping fit.

The toll on public health of protecting public health is still mind boggling.

I'm feeling particularly groundhog day today. There's a family birthday and I remember the message exchange, on a grotty, grey, drizzly March day. I'd just done my last fitness class. They'd managed to go for a pub lunch, but everything was just unravelling through the week and the school announcements made the previous day. I sobbed after dropping them off on the 20th. It was pretty obvious mine are not natural home learners. I'm not sure if I'm glad that I didn't know that that was that school year finished.

I'm actually doing a lot of "exercise" but I think it's not compensating for the lack of everyday movement. Also I'm sitting downstairs a lot and not in my ergonomically designed office, because of the noise from neighbours now at home all the time. Also I'm wondering whether running has also contributed to this! Good you've got a race to train for to motivate you. My gym's outdoor swimming pool opens in just over a week, though you have to change outside....

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 19/03/2021 14:20

That's how I feel Tabby. I've been cycling (stationary bike) and have also started doing yoga (there are a lot of yoga classes on the Peloton app) although probably not very well. My downward-facing dog is more knackered pooch at the moment but we press on.

But besides that I tend to sit in my chair and not move around much. I'm fitter, technically, but I haven't lost much in the way of weight. (I have a few kilos I'd rather not have.)

Today is being spent cleaning to keep myself busy while DH is in hospital. He's already texted me about the 'special undergarments' which I am leaving to description and will not require a photo of! Hoping he'll be sorted imminently and ready to be picked up late afternoon.

110APiccadilly · 19/03/2021 14:25

I have a back problem and the only thing that really kept it under control was swimming. Previous lockdowns, I was in the lake/sea in order to cope. I can feel it creeping up on me again, but I'm a bit reluctant to get into the sea right now - the water's pretty much at its coldest and I've heard cold water swimming if you're breastfeeding tends to be painful on the breasts! Desperately hoping pools reopen soon.

Evenstar · 19/03/2021 15:43

I have really missed my yoga, I don’t think I could really do much of it now but I can’t really cope with doing stuff on Zoom, so it has been a year now.

After my trouble climbing the stairs episode the other week my GP has provisionally diagnosed fibromyalgia and referred me to a rheumatologist to confirm. I have seen a physiotherapist today who has said for now I should only do some yoga if my pain is under control and carry on with my daily dog walk.

I think to be honest this has probably been going on for a long time, but all my coping strategies for pain and stress are not available so it has reached crisis point ☹️ I am sure with the lack of exercise facilities and the difficulty of accessing medical care there are many people in a similar position. We don’t have COVID though, so we are just collateral damage.

TabbyStar · 19/03/2021 15:54

Not heard that before, but it's probably going to be pretty painful everywhere...! Better to acclimatise gradually as the weather gets colder over the year, though I guess it's still going to be a while until water warms up. Still hoping for a 12 April opening for gyms. I miss a swim and steam, and jacuzzi.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 19/03/2021 16:17

I have really missed group exercise classes and getting sweaty in a studio.

I am exercising - it is a rare day when I don't walk at least 10,000 steps, plus I run 3 days a week, and do barre 3 times a week too. But I JUST CAN'T STOP STUFFING MY FACE. I am now at the point where I am not even conscious that I am doing it. Gained about a stone over the last year.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/03/2021 17:01

By 9:20 on a school day, I've moved more than I do on a lockdown day assuming I didn't exercise that day.

I'm trying to be more mindful about food, particularly carbs. I did manage to get back to my New Year 2020 weight by Jan and didn't gain over the unChristmas due to a lack of family sofas and social life, and that was undone in Jan/ Feb. I'm only just in the healthy zone now, but that's no margin for error, and I feel the surplus half stone when I move. I know it's not a lot to some people, but being small, I don't hide it well, and I'm now in the age where it is more effort to not creep up, so I want to get down into my happy zone to buy a few more years of safety margin.

Bog I'm the same. Only about 7-10lb over my 'best' weight but literally feel like I'm lugging every pound of it when I run. I was the fittest and healthiest I'd ever been I 2019 - lots of running and swimming. Finally back into running after losing the motivation in the first lockdown. I also worried about about going out more than once and was saving my exercise to walk with the DC. Can hardly believe I thought like that now Hmm

I can shift a couple of pounds during the week but pur it back on at the weekend in wine/gin and chocolate as I feel like I deserve some sort of treat to mark the weekend.

It's definitely the incidental movement I'm missing. Used to always be running around after school taking the DC to stuff and then getting stuff done while I waited for them.

ISaySteadyOn · 19/03/2021 21:25

Me too.

I found this article interesting thecritic.co.uk/lockdown-has-fostered-a-shadow-pandemic-of-violence-against-women/

Fantastic article thanks Steady

Does anyone know what the deal is with the supermarkets who sell other stuff like clothing? Is it sealed off again?

The nearest one is a long grim walk along an A road. I could phone in the AM but I don't know if they man the phone these days. Thanks.

BogRollBOGOF · 19/03/2021 23:06

My supermarkets are fully open as usual. I actially bought a vest top on tonight's shopping just because I like the colour. I've got a good collection of that style!

SewVeryLazy · 19/03/2021 23:09

All the supermarkets I've been to and am aware of others going to, have everything open this time around @AcornAutumn

AcornAutumn · 19/03/2021 23:09

Thanks Bog.

My sister said hers are properly open but she lives saaaaarf of the river.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 19/03/2021 23:09

Are you in England Acorn? All the ones near me have all bits open as normal .

AcornAutumn · 19/03/2021 23:14

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

Yes, in England

Sounds good, that's a few people saying it now.

Last time I was in the Post Office, the cards were sectioned off, might be just a crazy local branch manager.

AcornAutumn · 19/03/2021 23:26

The loneliness is like a steamroller today.

No prizes for guessing the song

🎤
Nothing making sense
Viral load measured and feed yourself fear
Organise your safe shopping
Hurt, mask, impoverish the people

Each day living out a lie
Life took cheaply for virus, virus, virus...

Online extreme loneliness
Isolation emptiness🎤

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 19/03/2021 23:29

That does sound crazy. I bought mother's day cards in my local small asda. They had a special extra display stand for them

I've also been to a bigger Asda and M&S on my quest for school uniform. I was in a Tesco last night that had signs in the clothes bit about being able to browse but respect others' space.

I swear I go round supermarkets these days like I did pub crawls when I was young!

AcornAutumn · 19/03/2021 23:37

Mrs I'm only considering it because I don't know how else to deal with the loneliness.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 19/03/2021 23:41

I definitely feel better from being out and about. I would go if you think it'll help Acorn sending Flowers and Brew

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 19/03/2021 23:52

I've been thinking a lot recently and feeling resentful to be honest about how different this all is for people who have all friends and family within a small local area. I see lots of people where I live out walking with others and of course I don't blame them for doing that but I've moved around lots from university onwards and DH is from a different UK country so friends and family are all over the place.

It's always been something we've really enjoyed- travelling at any opportunity but now feel quite stuck and isolated compared to others who have grown up and stayed in the one place. We chose where we live partly cos it's close to my DM which I'm thankful for but also because of it's great transport links to get away which is now pretty ironic!
