Exams: Private Candidate - what are others doing?

My DS1 has been studying IGCSEs with ICSLearn and was booked in to take as a private candidate at a nearby college (in part because I fears if he wasn't booked into these before cancelation, that he might not be eligible for results as was an issue for some private candidates last year).

So this last week, we've found he's eligible ICSLearn's Teach Assessed Grades though it will require him to withdraw from where he booked, book in with ICSLearn by next week, and pay for further controlled assessments. The deadline to withdraw and book in is next week. We didn't make their mock exam deadline due to delays in getting his photo ID so it will just be whatever further controlled online assessments are available.

We were all ready to go with that when today the college he was booked to take the exams has today said they are still in contact with Ofqual and are veering towards an assessment set by the exam board, to be externally marked, and the private candidates being allowed to go in for it, but there is still no real details. There were issues with this college with private candidates, but have said "we are more confident this year about private candidates achieving a grade."

He's currently undecided, going between the two since he got the email from the college - he doesn't like that he has to choose one or the other by next week. I'm wondering what others are doing - maybe it will help him feel comfortable making a decision.
