Take a break magazines competitions

Does anyone here enter the competitions or have actually won anything? I have been entering them for a few years and have never won anything. I never actually read the stories cos they're a bit rubbish, but I enjoy the puzzles. Anyone actually had any success or won anything nice in any other competitions?

I used to enter those competitions all the time. One day I excitedly ripped open an envelope telling me I was a competition winner.......of a tube of foot cream. I gave up after that but DH occasionally sticks a ‘take a saddo’ in my Christmas stocking as a joke.

We are talking about 30 years ago here, but my Nanna won a magazine competition. It could well have been Take a break, or, maybe Tit bits [think that was the name!], or the tamer My Weekly!
She won a holiday for four to Majorca!
She gave it to my Mum and Dad, and myself, and my youngest brother went with them. It was the poshest holiday we had ever had...
[Previous holidays being Hemsby...].

I’ve won loads but not from take a break.
My best prizes were holidays , went to Spain twice i think,
An overnight stay at the ritz, that was lovely
2 Virgin upper class flights , cost the price of a luxury cruise each..they were worth £8, 250 and most valuable prize
Then I had TVs, hampers, days out, weekend breaks one of those was the whole family to London with tix to starlight express, theatre tickets, a weekend break to Belgium,
Chelsea flower show tix and overnight stays at a hotel in Bloomsbury
Loads of gig tickets.
We once won 14 tix to Metallica from one competition, festival tickets,
Perfume, jewellery, toiletries,

Was fabulous

Oops, I forgot I won money as well.

Solongtoshort · 11/03/2021 18:36

Not me but my friend won a car, hover, white appliances, money and shopping vouchers.

I had a go for about 3 months and got bored.

ImRealHonest · 11/03/2021 18:40

I went through a phase of entering every week, never won a thing.

I always go through the one that you pick prizes up to £3k or whatever it is, and decide what I’m having when I win

What kind of competitions were you entering, and what kind of time period did you win those prizes over? That's an impressive haul!

I've never won any from magazines. Did win a bit of money in a raffle once...

Kissingspines · 11/03/2021 19:04

@Dowser do you spend your spare time doing comps or are you just spectacularly lucky? Grin

Rainbowandscarlett · 11/03/2021 19:16

My mate won £40 with chat and my uncle and aunt won a posh holiday (I’m going back 30 odd years)
They where unable to go so whoever they won it from swapped it for food to the value of the holiday
They got so much they gave 3/4 away-I walked in and my grandads kitchen was full-floor to ceiling-of tinned goods, chocolates, crisps and frozen foods
Took us about 7/8 years to work our way through it all
To me aged about 7 it was amazing but to my granddad it must have been a nightmare!

Everythingmagnolia · 11/03/2021 19:19

I won £50 from Chat magazine about 10 years ago Grin

hippychick11 · 11/03/2021 19:20

@Dowser that's fantastic. Think I'll persevere after hearing this and keep entering comps Smile

I won three times with take a break. Some hair clippers, £50 and an awful plastic red and yellow take a break watch

Dowser · 11/03/2021 20:39

Thanks, well it was a very long time ago and a good haul of them were tiebreakers.

I started in 1979 when my son was a baby.
He kept us awake a lot and sometimes I found I couldn’t get back to sleep..so to take my mind off things, I used to compose tie breakers in my head for the relevant competition.

You had to buy the product and submit a receipt and I really did well .

However the Virgin flights and three separate amounts of £1000 were just random draws

I probably haven’t done any since 2000 at least as the tiebreaker ones started to disappear and they nearly all became prize draws and entries on line.

I did them when a stamp was about 20p , not the princely sum it is now.

I remember when a site called free money set up and people could play one entry a day for free and that was one I won a £1000 on

The other two big dollops of cash were from the daily Mail
They used to do a couple of little quizzes every week, so I’d find the answers then quickly get it in the postbox and I was over the moon to get a letter to find I’d won a grand because this was first out of the hat

Five weeks later I won again.
They thought it was the same comp..but it wasn’t
Anyway they stumped up.

When my Dd was about 12 she entered a Today newspaper design a dress for Diana. Winners got a weekend in London.
There were 4 dates you could pick from .
Anyway she entered and won one of the 6 prizes.
However when we rang to claim our prize, the organisers said everyone had to go on a certain date when we were going to be on holiday in france.
But ..not to worry said the bright and breezy voice on the end of the phone...we will send you a video.😡

I knew I wasn’t wrong and and I ransacked every pile of cuttings and comps I had searching for the vital piece of paper to exonerate me

I was having a lie down one day and it just came to me, it was inside a clipboard on the piano..went and had a look ..yep there it was.

So they coughed up the weekend at a Hilton hotel for all 5 of us , bed breakfast and evening meal.and the trip to starlight express thrown in

Another one was when my Dd had won a comp to go on the Johnny Vaughan movie show.
Most of the prizes were just a day visit, but because we lived so far away, they flew us to Bristol, a taxi to bath and two nights in the fabulous bath spa hotel and then the train home.

My dd had a lovely day out with Johnny and the film crew and I had a lovely day around bath.

It was a wonder time, sometimes you’d get 3 or 4 prizes a week and then you’d have a lean spell for months but I think the fun has gone out of it now.

Happy days..I wish I’d recorded all my prizes but there you go. I didn’t.

One tv I won was for something like the milk board and there was free milk for a year as well.
I think the milkman thought it was free milk for life because it went on for quite some while.

In about 15 years of doing the TaB competitions, I've won £50 and two lots of £10.

PolaDeVeboise · 12/03/2021 18:09

My Mum won a holiday for 2 to Croatia a couple of years ago with Take a Break.
