My 9yo likes Harry potter, anything by Tom Fletcher, the Wolf Brother series

Rubytinsleslippers · 10/03/2021 20:56

The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch.

Has she read the How to Train Your Dragon series? If not, and she likes it, prepare yourself for a year of really boring conversations about different kinds of dragon.

Also, the Malamamder series and the Morrigan Crow books are great.

DelurkingAJ · 10/03/2021 21:30

Artemis Fowl, the Terry Pratchett books for younger people (Wee Free Men etc) both big hits here.

HamCob · 10/03/2021 21:34

Not sure if this will work but my DS has similar tastes and I got lots of great recommendations here:

What are your 8/9 year old boys reading? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4174909-what-are-your-8-9-year-old-boys-reading

merryhouse · 10/03/2021 21:40

My boys enjoyed Mr Gum (I only read a bit and can't remember how many female characters there are).

There was a similar thread not long ago here

I posted several ideas on that and since then have thought of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (Joan Aiken)

monstermissy · 10/03/2021 21:57

Judy Blume?

monstermissy · 10/03/2021 21:57

Just not 'Forever' I don't know if 9 is still a bit young but I think she did books for younger kids too

devildeepbluesea · 10/03/2021 22:00

DD is a bit younger (8) but a good reader, she loves the Witch Wars series by Sibeal Pounder.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 10/03/2021 22:02

My DD loves Chris Russell’s Goth Girl books and Jaqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather series

tunnocksreturns2019 · 10/03/2021 22:03

Chris Russell?! Phone autocorrect fail! Chris Riddell!

SpringSunshineandTulips · 10/03/2021 22:04

David baddiel

MrsMoggy · 10/03/2021 22:05

My nearly 9 year old boy has also read roald Dahl and david Walliams, others he likes are Harry Potter, David baddiel and diary of a wimpy kid books

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 10/03/2021 22:09

Dd loved How to Train your Dragon series at around that age

AdditionalCharacter · 10/03/2021 22:10

My DS liked Jiggy McCue books at that age.

Porcupineintherough · 10/03/2021 22:12

For child based action and adventure she could try the Laura Marlin Mysteries. Or "A Dog called Grrk" (that's the first of the series).

RampantIvy · 10/03/2021 22:13

The Lemony Snicket series?

Mercedes519 · 10/03/2021 22:16

The 13 story treehouse and all the sequels. Funny and illustrated so easy to read.

Amelia Fang is also going down well here.

Nohomemadecandles · 10/03/2021 22:18

Pamela Butchart's Izzy books?
Iguana Boy series

frogsbreath · 10/03/2021 22:18

My 9 year old has been losing his shit laughing at the Mr Gum book series. Makes little sense but it's the first book series he's read independently and it has positive female characters (not old granny though 🤪).

mrsfeatherbottom · 10/03/2021 22:24

My DD loved the Roddy Doyle kids books at that age.

Nohomemadecandles · 10/03/2021 22:40

Danny Wallace writes funny books too.
And Jo Nesbo's Fart Powder series

Freddiefox · 10/03/2021 22:57

My 10 year really liked the ickabog

wejammin · 10/03/2021 22:59

My 9 year old is really enjoying the Redwall series at the moment. The characters are animals, but they include some strong females.
