Not tech savvy. Is there a birthday/events reminder that notifies you via WhatsApp or sms?

Recently I've been forgetting things a lot. I'm after a way of remembering birthdays and events...my calender on phone not great. I'm thinking I would definitely notice if I could get a WhatsApp reminder as I look at that regularly. Is there anyway of doing that?

Not sure about text or WhatsApp but if you use something like a google calendar you can get email alerts, or phone alerts if your phone is compatible.

BertieBotts · 10/03/2021 19:14

I expect you could set up your calendar to do SMS alerts.

Or what about a low tech solution, a Dutch birthday calendar? They look lovely and it's a nice visual aid and reminder.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/03/2021 19:15

I think google can text you.

I've got that but even though I name the title eg 'Bob's birthday' it doesn't come up on screen.

Whats a Dutch calendar? I'm so annoyed with myself as I do write on the calender but I guess I haven't had to look on it so much recently. I value remembering people's birthdays and never use to forget.

Are you using an Iphone? It has a special "birthdays" calendar - you have to add each person's birthday to their entry in your contacts list, then select the Birthdays calendar in your phone Calendar and set the notification for that calendar for a couple of days ahead or whatever.

No, its Samsung. I have a Google calender but I don't find it great.

Moonpig do reminders and I order cards in advance which is good.

Depends on if you like Moonpig.

cariadlet · 10/03/2021 19:33

I'm also on android and use the Google calendar.

How are you adding events?

I add a reminder for things like popping to the shops when I just want to pick up a couple of things. I won't forget to go to the shop and can open up the calendar to check the reminder and see what I have to buy.

But if I want to add more details (eg birthday or an appointment) then I add an event to the calendar. There's an option to add a reminder. You can choose whether you want the reminder to be an alert that pings on your phone or to be an email. You can also choose how many hours, days or weeks in advance you want to receive the alert.

Last paragraph should have said that there's an option to add a notification rather than to add a reminder (otherwise it sounds a bit confusing).

Would Alexa do it? Alexa remind me every year on x date that its x's birthday on x date.

Thanks. I will look more closely then. I may not be doing it right!

Through google calendar you can select the event and set an alert - a notification or email alert, with choices of how much time in advance.

FusionChefGeoff · 10/03/2021 20:16

You can get apps that will ping reminders I've just installed one for the same reason!

Wilma55 · 11/03/2021 07:20

If you download the Alexa app the reminders will show on there as well as be announced.
