Gush of blood after 13 week ultrasound scan

Hi there
This is my first post on this type of forum but I’m looking for some reassurance or if others have experienced the same and what happened next with them.
Sadly I had a missed miscarriage in my first pregnancy back in October, we found out at 9 weeks that the baby had stopped growing at 7 weeks.
Thankfully we were very lucky enough to conceive again and it’s been a very nerve racking first trimester. On Monday we went for our dating scan and it was all showing great signs, very active baby, strong heartbeat and pulsing placenta. However that afternoon I started to get a brown colour when wiping and by the evening I had a gush of bright red blood out of nowhere. I immediately thought the worst seeing how much blood there was down the toilet and when I wiped. We went to A&E and they checked my cervix which was closed and not showing any active blood flow, however they were unable to scan me until today (Wednesday). I’ve been in so much discomfort around my tummy since and I know this could well be growing pains made worse by the stress I’m feeling but we’re so worried! I’ve also continued to have quite abit of morning sickness and sore breasts.
Has anyone else experienced the same?
Thanks in advance for any responses or advice.

I had a bleed like this with my DD, it was a couple of days after my 12 week scan and I just felt a trickle in my knickers after I got up from my settee.
It was bright red and was about an eggcupfull. I went to A&E where they checked that my cervix was closed then asked me to attend EPAU the next day for a scan to check things over. I wasn't having any real pains but I was very worried. The scan showed a patch of bleeding near the amniotic sac but baby was healthy at this point. They said everything should be fine but that the patch could result in more bleeding or just be absorbed.
In the end I had several small instances of bleeding up until around 19 weeks, all brown so "old" blood and no pain and DD was born healthy on her due date.

I experienced bleeds in all four of my pregnancies at some point during the first 14 weeks - the MWs all told me that while it isn't really normal to bleed during pregnancy, it is very common.

Hopefully all will be well with your scan today, I know how worried you must be OP. Good luck.

Hi op have you had your scan today yet? I hope all goes well.
I had quite a lot of brown spotting from about 7 weeks pregnant, had a scan which showed that baby was perfectly healthy and with a good heartbeat (spotting continued for several more weeks and they had no explanation for it). I then had a big red bleed on the morning of my 12 week scan, i literally got out of bed and there was a big gush. Its likely i bled from my cervix overnight and it then stopped, but the blood pooled and didnt come out as i was lying down, so it came out all at once. My 12week scan luckily was just a few hours later and again it showed everything was fine with the baby. I also had the abdominal discomfort you mentioned, i think its from the uterus growing it had me bent over in pain some days in the first trimester!
Its hard to not think the worst with bleeding but its definitely not always the case that theres something wrong. I have my fingers crossed for you xx

I had the gush of blood, around week 14 very scary

Ds is now sitting next to me on the sofa!! The dr we saw said it happened a lot, but it could still be viable. Just don't let them do anything without having a scan first xx

Good luck

I lost what I thought was a lot of blood when I was 13 weeks pregnant with DS (now 15). I remember being on a ward over the weekend as the hospital wouldnt scan me until the Monday thinking I had lost him, the doctors talking to me as if I had lost him. Once I had the scan and they saw he was fine I was released.

I went on holiday with my family to Devon the following week, DH is a teacher and he was on a school trip and the rest of us (DPs, DSis and her family) had booked a cottage and we thought it best I still went as they were my support without DH around.

Two days into the trip, it happened again. I was taken to Barnstable hospital, who were excellent. After standing in a puddle of blood in A and E, I was scanned straight away, and had a picture of 2 hands and 2 feet looking as if he was just clinging on.

They kept me in for the rest of the week and I went home with my family.

I did lose a large clot later on the pregnancy and he was born 5 weeks early but he was perfect.

It was really scary at the time and while everyone expected me to have lost him he was fine, we were very fortunate.

Bleeding can be normal so please try to not terrify yourself.

I would try not to worry too much at this stage, assuming your baby looked happy and healthy at the scan. I had a gush of blood with my first around 10 weeks (not after scan), but lost quite a lot of blood very suddenly. After a scan with my 2nd, I bled heavily like a heavy period for 2 weeks, like bleeding through clothes heavy. I had a miscarriage in between them (when ironically, I didn't bleed at all - was a mmc). But the bleeding seems to be related to a cervical ectropion, which is annoying, but totally unrelated to the pregnancies. Both of my pregnancies went on to be healthy and completely uneventful with no further bleeding. If you do have a cervical ectropion though, yes, scans (even abdominal ones) can irritate them.

Thank you all so much for your replies and sharing your experiences with me. I’ve just had the scan and baby is wiggling away very happy - the relief!!!! Hopefully a little less eventful from now on but thank you again for your words of reassurance and kindness x

Thats fantastic news OP so pleased for you!

everythingbackbutyou · 10/03/2021 19:47

Had this with 3 successful pregnancies, the worst with my youngest where it turned out I had a subchorionic hemorrhage that resolved itself. So pleased you had a good ultrasound- I hope the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful Smile

Hi All, I went for my 12 week scan yesterday they said everything was fine despite not being able to get exact measurements as the baby wasn't in the correct position, I've got to go back for bloods next month. I asked if everything was fine and she said yes, I saw the baby moving about, I asked if i was going to be able to hear the heartbeat and she said not at this scan but yet I've seen people say they heard their baby's heartbeat at 12 week scans, i was a bit disappointed & it would of put my mind at ease a lot more if I was able to of heard the heartbeat. I woke up this morning and went for a wee and when i wiped myself there was blood there, I rang the midwife and told her as this is the first lot of blood I've saw during my pregnancy and I'm now 12+5 days, she asked if i had sex i told her 2 days ago and she said it could be from that as you have more blood going there and that can cause it, there's nothing there now but I've still been worried she told me if I get more that's like clots to ring them back up, i haven't had any bleeding any other times after having sex. I'm wondering if it was from having my scan as they was pushing so hard to try and get the baby to move to get measurements in total I was being scanned for about 45 minutes and my stomach was getting sore so I'm wondering if they might of aggravated it.

scaredsadandstuck · 12/03/2021 17:06

Ah so glad all was well. I had the exact same thing with both my pregnancies at the 12/13 week mark - both a few days after my scan. Scared the life out of me! Those 'babies' are now 9 and 13 🙂

Csks · 12/03/2021 17:21

@everythingbackbutyou @Isababybel thank you both xx

@Emit30x understandable why you feel the way you do. Did you manage to see the heart fluttering on the screen? If so that should reassure you a lot. I haven’t heard my baby’s heartbeat yet but seeing it pumping away on the screen is massive for me after a previous loss. Seems to be a link between where women have been for their 12 week scan and then experienced the same as us after. I had also had sex the night before so could have quite possibly been caused from that but this would be almost 24hours later and I’ve never bled after sex either.

@scaredsadandstuck thank you and it’s reassuring to know you only experienced it around this week as I’ve been on edge the last few days thinking I’m going to bleed again - is it likely to be a one off? They couldn’t find any cause for the bleeding on the scan so no suggestion it could happen again but it came from nowhere on Monday so I feel a nervous wreck!

Thanks again to all you lovely ladies for support xx

@Csks She showed me the heartbeat on the scan she said there's the heartbeat although I barely had chance to look before she moved it to a different position. I've just been to the toilet and wipe nothing was there unless you have a good wipe inside which is a brown colour which I assume is old blood even though it was red this morning.

Emit30x · 19/03/2021 21:05

Hey All, i had dark red blood early hours Thursday morning when I went for a wee again I wiped myself and there was dark red blood and 1 single dark blood clot that was about the size of a thumb nail that was a dark reddy browny black colour after this the bleeding has disappeared again. I spoke to the midwife and she said it wasn't anything to worry about as the blood wasn't fresh such as a bright red colour she said by the colour of it its old blood being dark red. She told me that if it ends up that colour thats when they would only give you a scan. I honestly don't know why it keeps happening this time I haven't even had sex it was just random and ive been getting no pains at all when it happens. Its been worrying me
