How painful is it to have stitches removed?

From a limb, not from my nether regions.

Worse than a bikini wax or better?

In the past I've had stitches removed from my stomach and my hand. Neither was painful, just a bit of an odd feeling.

YanTanTethera123 · 10/03/2021 09:08

Not painful in my experience; I had 32 staples and stitches removed after fractured and dislocating my ankle.
Hope it goes well OP, take a couple of paracetamol an hour before if you’re worried it might hurt.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 10/03/2021 09:15

Usually not painful, unless the stitches are very tight and scabbed over then it might require a bit of digging about to get them out, unfortunately. Hope yours come out easily, op

Thanks, that’s reassuring. Good tip about the paracetamol.

Depends where, I had some taken out of my arm which didn't hurt at all but the ones taken out of my foot were basically on the bone so it was super painful.

spiderlight · 10/03/2021 09:40

I had stitches removed from my chin and barely felt it. Just a slight pulling sensation.

justilou1 · 10/03/2021 09:50

Tugging, pulling - not as bad as an ingrown hair

WhoWants2Know · 10/03/2021 10:25

I had some in my right boob from a mole removal and it didn't hurt badly.

AnnaSW1 · 10/03/2021 10:27

Its not bad at all

Back of ankle/leg, Achilles tendon area.

I had some taken out of my knee a month ago .. it felt weird but not painful. I almost fainted though and had to have 'extra care' due to having a strange knee phobia 🙄 I felt a right idiot

sallyisstarstruck · 10/03/2021 10:48

I had some taken out of a cut above my eye a few months back. They weren't painful, more of an uncomfortable tugging feeling.

KaptainKaveman · 10/03/2021 10:49

I had a weird 'dragging' sensation but it didn't actually hurt. Achilles tendon might be more painful though.

Bells3032 · 10/03/2021 11:02

I've had them removed from my back. like others say generally a pulling sensation and nothing more. maybe more like having eyebrows done than a bikini wax and probably still less painful than that

I've just had 32 staples removed last week following fractured & dislocated ankle!

OP, not to scare you but I found the debriding of the skin around the wound, after being covered in dressing for a month much worse. I agree with tip above, take a couple of paracetamol beforehand.

sueelleker · 10/03/2021 13:32

I had 15 staples removed from my leg 2 weeks after a knee replacement-hardly felt it.

BashfulClam · 10/03/2021 14:00

I fainted getting the ones in my face out as I worked myself into a state(I was only 12)! It actually didn’t hurt.

Picklypickles · 10/03/2021 14:05

Stitches don't hurt coming out usually, I did find having staples removed from my abdomen after I had my kidney removed painful but that was probably more to do with my allergic reaction to the staples and the infection than the actual staples iyswim.

MamaMeAh · 10/03/2021 14:12

it depends how deep they are
Its just an odd sensation
You used to be able to request them to spray it with a local anesthetic , ask them if you are worried

BigPaperBag · 10/03/2021 14:49

I had 5 removed from my head once. It didn’t really hurt as I recall. My hair being pulled apart to get to the stitches was probably the most painful part!

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 10/03/2021 14:53

I've never found it painful. It was a bit of a weird pulling sensation, but it didn't actually hurt. I found that the wound was less itchy afterwards too.

DragonWillow · 10/03/2021 15:02

I'm incredibly squeamish & find it ok, not painful just a bit odd

SpottedOnMN · 10/03/2021 15:05

I took mine out myself as they were moving freely. I just snipped each stitch and tugged it out. Probably not to be recommended!
